So, whatever happened to the government contracts?

So, something like a YEAR ago, we were, I thought, supposed to get some sort of news about the scientific results of the testing being done on the WB7/WB8 models. I have heard nothing in the science/tech press about this at all in the last year. Haven't been back here in awhile. So, what happened? W...

Well, I suppose it's that time again. It's nearly the end of July, 2012. Is anything known of what the results of all the government money spent was? Has there been a single word out of EMC2 in the last year? Weren't we supposed to have public reports long ago?

So, conservatives feel that government-funded research is OK? If it has serious defense applications then absolutely. As it is the DUTY of government to provide for our defense, therefore it is their DUTY to procure the best weapons and technology to accomplish that goal. But. . . doesn't *everythi...

How big a problem is neutron activation?

Hello, So, I know that one reason they would like to try to get p-11B fusion, if possible, instead of d-d or d-t is that the hydrogen fusion reactions release neutron. I guess the reason that's a problem is that the neutron flux will "activate" some of the atoms in the structural elements of the rea...

"As of 3Q/2011, the WB-8 device has generated over 500 high power plasma shots." Does this mean they just create a millisecond pulse and measure data? It doesn't sound like they've run the device in anything like a constant power production mode? I suppose if they're testing scaling, short pulses mi...

Any polywell news?

Hi, So, I've not been around for awhile. Last I checked in, the word was we were/are supposed to get some sort of news about Polywell in late fall or winter. Well, it's almost winter, so I thought I'd check. I don't see any headlines here about Polywell (just LENR/E-cat), so I suppose that means not...

This article is very interesting, and sounds very hopeful. I just have to wonder why Nebel would choose to retire "so close to the finish line"? I mean, if Polywell works as well as they think it should, this is one of those rare inventions that changes the whole world in 20 years. The sort of inven...

April report?

So, we're nearing the end of April. Someone said that one of the parts of the Navy contract was supposed to wrap up April, or something. Has there been any news about the Polywell?

Seems like if you had a sufficient quantity of antimatter, you could simply levitate the car by more 'conventional' means, like harrier-jet style downward vector thrust engines (although, probably using somethign like an ion drive). Or, perhaps a very power electromagnet (or set of them at several p...

Efficiency only matters if your fuel is expensive, limited in supply, or both, no? or if your reactor design requires large amounts of recirculating energy to break even (like p-B designs do) But, do note, that my original comment was in the context of using D-D or D-T fusion, and thermal conversio...

@happyjack27: That answers at least one of the questions - as I thought, fusion shut down would be, for all practical purposes, instantaneous, but it still leaves a few questions open: are there any radioactive fusion products in the chamber, and if so, how much, and would the residiual thermal ener...

I don't think I can move the post. I thought about putting this in general, but since it's prompted by the news from Fukushima, I then thought it might be better in here. Basically, I wasn't really sure where to put this, and news seemed like as good a place as any. Back to the question at hand, I j...

Questions about fusion safety, waste

Hello all. In light of the recent events in Japan, I wanted to double check my understanding of fusion power safety characteristics. This has been my understanding of fusion vs. fission, thus far: In a fission reactor, you typically have a large fuel supply deposited into the reactor, once every 1-5...

Efficiency only matters if your fuel is expensive, limited in supply, or both, no? Imaging that everybody in town has a Mr Fusion in their kitchen that is 5% efficient converting thermal to electrical, and each Mr Fusion is generating 100 kW thermal to power each home... Now, scale that up to sever...

Efficiency only matters if your fuel is expensive, limited in supply, or both, no? No. Efficiency relates directly to mass. It takes a lot of massive machinery to convert heat energy to electricity as well as to remove the excess waste heat. If you want a smaller energy producing device to produce ...
