As much as I'd like polywell reactors to work, we must remember that extraordinary claims, such as cheap and economical fusion (from a field long written off by a lot of the mainstream physics community) requires extraordinary evidence. This evidence does not exist yet. With this in mind, why must f...

As a chemist, let me state this clearly: Down with this sort of alarmist claptrap. Yes, oil will run out. Yes, demand will rocket. Yes, prices will increase. But world ending Armageddon? No. Luckily, there is more than one way to get petrolium. The only snag is that it is more expensive. Steam refor...

Quick question, and I may be barking up the wrong tree here: Is this the same Focus fusion that appeared in a google talk a while ago? If so, is this the same focus fusion that requires the x-rays produced to be collected for power? If the answer is yes to both, I would be worrying / testing that x-...

This highlights perfectly the problem which my "5 things you like about the political ideology you hate" seeks to highlight. Not a single positive word thus far. The current level of debate, highlighted within this thread there is not even a recognition that the other side could ever do any right. T...

To answer your question directly: Personally speaking, the experiences of both myself and my country with socialism are generally speaking pretty positive. Good experiences from all my family with collectively funded national healthcare. World class state education to university level. Council servi...

Ok, no need to jump off the deep end people. From the ferocity and strong wills of the replies thus far I fear I may of hit a raw nerve. From the responses so far to my little request, would I be fair in saying that a large number here really do honestly believe that the modern socialistic ideals ho...

Not quite what I was going for... Also, please note. Communism != Socialism. One thinks that their should be no free market, everything controlled by the state. The other considers their should be a controlled free market with the natural monopolies controlled by the state. But a very telling respon...

Ok then, a quick question to those currently denouncing socialist ideals.

Can you name 5 things that you would consider good about socialistic policies?

Consider it an experiment into the health of a democracy.

Disclaimer: Both European and Socialist. Quick question. Can somebody explain why is the american debate at the moment, particularly about healthcare, is so vengeful? Firing out insults by the left, the right and center to the point at which the right in particular no longer even even seems capable ...

A quick wikipedia on the issue brings up the reason why there seems to be contrasting views. The radiation hormesis hypothesis shows "substantial cancer rate reduction between 50 and 123 Bq per cubic meter". The british study indicates action is needed in homes containing greater than 200 Bq per cub...

(Sorry for the double post, but seeing as this addresses a different topic, I think it is meretted) Hi there Coolbrucelong, I would first like to agree with your post. Geography does make a difference with radon levels. But I would like to draw your attention to the reason why I choose to comment on...

Also it should be noted that radiation from the fly ash of coal fired stations is not the main health hazard. It is the ash itself. Particulate matter in the atmosphere has a huge number of well documented heath effects ranging from increased asthma rates to increased number of heart attacks.

Be careful when reading things into People and Radon exposure. The thing about Radon exposure is that it tends to be those of a slightly higher social standing who are exposed, the main source of this exposure being from granite. Not many people can afford granite kitchen surfaces and a lot of the s...

Hello, first time poster, long time lurker. I have never felt the need to post before, partly because much of the physics involved is far beyond my chosen profession, but I feel that I can contribute something to this particular discussion. From what I have read of this discussion of the freedom of ...
