Re: Dark matter theories
Well, my theory about dark matter is that we extrapolate the number of undiscovered galaxies and their black hole masses until all dark matter is absorbed into the black holes. Of course, I suspect that was the first calculation made when scientists noticed the need to add matter to the universe mod...

Re: Direct O2 evolution in collisions of carbon dioxide with surfaces
Does the character of the surface have any effect on the efficiency of oxygen production? I'm thinking along the lines of a catalyst. And there must be an energy level sweet spot to maximize conversion.

Huh! This was a booster. No one rides the boosters, ever.Maui wrote:Welp, I’m guessing this will end up being a full year delay. Glad this didn’t happen with astronauts onboard tho:

Re: Thermal battery with 6-8 times the energy density of lithium
Climate Change Technologies, also known as CCT Energy Storage, has launched its TED (Thermal Energy Device) with a set of remarkable claims. Remarkable claims require remarkable proof. I have yet to see either in this case. Pumped hydro still remains the cheapest most economical way to store energy...

Re: Thermal battery with 6-8 times the energy density of lithium
I didn't see Rossi's picture in the article, but a thermal generator with only 3 moving parts? Suggests thermoelectric generator with efficiencies ranging from 6% to 15%, that doesn't seem like a very good deal to me.

asymmetrical magnetic coupling
I thought this discovery was quite interesting. Not a magnetic monopole, but ... interesting. I wonder if it could be applied to the EM drive or to the Woodward effect. https://phys.org/news/2018-11-defy-19th-century-law-physics.html?utm_source=quora&utm_medium=referral Dr. Jordi Prat-Camps, a resea...

Re: SpaceX News
The mystery to me is that this object seems to be ahead of the stage as the stage overtakes it. The stage has done nothing except a flip end to end while continuing on a ballistic path from MECO. That implies to me that everything that was carried along from launch, ice or whatever is ruled out beca...

Re: Factor X have we finally found the fountain of Youth?
I don't know about telomeres but for health extension, Crispr Pharmaceuticals has something that's pretty sure. It is a targeted and programmable gene editing methodology. It has been approved for human trials. It very specifically targets the programmed gene in the dna strand, snips it out and rep...

Strange magnetic field source.
Any guesses as to what mechanism may be in play to enable this planet to maintain such a strong magnetic field. FWIW, I speculate that it is related to the compression of hydrogen to within 80% of ignition conditions. If compression does cause the magnetic fields, that does not speak well of efforts...
Re: EM Drive
EM drive just got peer reviews and it does not look good. Unfortunately, a new round of research out of Germany is casting some big doubts on those early results. In a new research paper the team argues that not only does the engine not actually produce any thrust, but that earlier tests may have e...

Re: SpaceX News
It is also notable that BFR has the capacity to LEO to launch multiple payloads that include kick motors. Such a configuration would allow the payloads to reach high orbits and perhaps some degree of plane change maneuvers. Added payload complexity is the downside of course.
