Re: General Fusion in the news

>Sounds like an opinion from someone banking their career on ITER, but that is just the way it 'sounds' to me, so that is a purely subjective jab. I'm sure it only just sounds that way and you are in fact just being objective. I would not classify myself as objective. However, my work is not on toka...

Re: General Fusion in the news

My jab wasn't aimed to say that ITER or tokamaks will necessarily be successful. My jab was aimed at the terrible perspective that the people of this forum have developed regarding the Polywell. >In fact, outside of ITER, Polywell is probably on a safer path than the others for probability of succes...

Re: General Fusion in the news

> Polywell has the image problem that the concept seem's to simple for the average investor to consider credible First of all, if you are trying to get funding for a scientific venture, you need to get an unrelated scientificially credible critic to analyze the concept. You don't appeal to investors...

Re: Research questions on Boron fuel for Polywell reactor

>From thermal load aspects, I understand the FRC scrape off layer is equivalent to the tokamak diverter. Am I wrong? I think it's important to keep in mind that you can (somewhat indefinitely) spread the area that of the SOL being splayed out in the FRC because the SOL ends where your device ends. Y...

Re: Research questions on Boron fuel for Polywell reactor

> I believe a Field Reversed cobfiguration will have a diverter problem similar to tokamaks, or spheromaks (?). What kind of divertor problem are you thinking of? One of the major advantage of the FRC is the scrape-off layer which naturally occurs from the formation of the FRC. In fact, I would say ...

Re: A 2015 Proposal for MIT co-lab: Public Education on Fusi

To be fair, it's not just fusion research that is largely unknown to the public.. it's plasma physics. Plasma physics has a popularity issue, only about 3% of physics graduate students are in plasma physics. Only one person has ever won a Nobel prize for plasma physics, and he was the founder of MHD...

Re: tokamak question

It's not the only instability, but as a practical matter, how much would it cost to produce such a magnetic field? Not worth considering if you are looking for an economically viable fusion reactor.

Re: Can anyone walk me through Field Reverse Configurations?

>All I meant was that plasma moves straight through null points. Be they in polywells or FRC. No. You meant to draw a comparison of stability between the two which would be illegitimate. The polywell is interesting enough on its own, and it'd be great to look at it for its own worth instead of dragg...

Of course, but you must always consider different time scales for your simulations. There is not enough computational power to do the whole range of time scal...

Re: Can anyone walk me through Field Reverse Configurations?

>Just to note, the pulsed formation/translation stage is 10's of microseconds while the lifetime of the combined FRC after the two toroids merge is into the few milliseconds. These times are similar to the simulations pictured earlier. Ah, thanks for clarifying, I thought you were saying the plasmas...

Re: Can anyone walk me through Field Reverse Configurations?

For more info, the most recent review of FRCs http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/pop/18/7/10.1063/1.3613680 (there is also one by Tuszewski from a longer time ago which is also very good). Another way to form FRCs is via a rotating magnetic field to establish an electron current. Essential...

Re: Can anyone walk me through Field Reverse Configurations?

>The null points in FRC have the same behavior as the null points in Polywells - this evidence can be used/stolen for Polywell research. Why would they? Polywell field lines wrap around the coils, and cusp out to the end of the device. What are the field lines which surround the null point of the FR...

Re: Can anyone walk me through Field Reverse Configurations?

Useful paper (and its related papers): http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/rsi/85/11/10.1063/1.4884616 >I do not think there is a null B field point inside the field reversed configuration Theoretically, the null-point (null-ring, really) is where that O-point is labeled.
