Re: Lawaranceville E-Newsletter
August Newsletter is out. Not much news. More work on switches and the prospect of starting PB11 experiments in September.

Re: National Ignition Facility
Yeah, I was only mentioning those that are less than 2 years away (potentially!). CFS, GF and TAE will be longer. CFS Q>1 attempt has shifted to the right to 2026 as well. Skipjack, I did not know that the SPARC Q>1 target year has moved to 2026. Where did you see that? I can't remember where it wa...

Re: National Ignition Facility
CFS is aiming for 2025 with the SPARC and General Fusion today issued a press release aiming for 2026 with their Lawson Machine 26 (LM26). Tokamak Energy and TAE Technologies also have detailed plans. The next step after achieving scientific breakeven is to do that repeatedly and reliably, which re...

Re: National Ignition Facility
I guess less than 2 years. That would be Helion and/or Zap. Less likely but not zero possibility candidates are LPPFusion, Horne, Pulsar Fusion and Avalanche.

Trenta says "good bye". Kinda sad, but that is the fate of experimental machines.

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024
I appreciated the extensive interview Kirtley did a few months ago and all the recent news about Helion is very encouraging. I was curious that with all the topics he covered I don't recall him talking about cost. Sometimes when an obvious issue goes unmentioned it indicates potential issues. Any t...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024
Well, the Wright Flyer was the first to meet all the main goals for a powered, heavier than air, flying machine. Able to take off from level ground, self powered, fully controllable. There were gliders before 1903, and there was powered flying too, but Flyer 1 was the first to do it all. I'd say th...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024
Helion claims they will reach wall-plug break-even in 2024, and have an operational reactor in 2028. Do you know of any substantially new technology in the past that went from proof of principle to first operational prototype in only four years? I can't think of one right away. I suppose it depends...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024
Producing Helium-3 by fusing pure Deuterium implies handling one third of the energy in the form of neutrons; that means complex, expensive arrangements for shielding and cooling, and faster degradation of the machine; the engineering of that have not been done. D-D neutrons are only 2.45 MeV, whic...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024
Image is not working for me either. It just says "image". As for cooling: I think the amount and kind of cooling needed will depend on whether it is a - pure D-He3 machine/ - mixed mode (breeding and cooling) machine - or a dedicated breeder machine I believe that pure D-He3 machines will just have ...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024
Each of these news letters is encouraging. 2024 is not far off (net electric milestone). Just to be clear their net electricity milestone is set for the end of 2024, not the beginning. Polaris will be operational early 2024 (January, they say, but I would not be surprised or upset if it slipped a c...
