Re: Helicity Space
According the pdf you linked the fusion event happens in the compression coils, and the fusion power depends only on the number of plectonemic plasma beams joined together [Pf=~ N^(3/2) with N>>2 ], so mirroring would not create any additional benefit and increasing Pf would be just a matter to inc...

Short presentation from December: https://infuse.ornl.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/You-S-2020-12-INFUSE-Workshop-Simulations-of-helical-shear-flow-stabilized-jet.pdf According to Zoominfo they have about 4 million in funding and 22 employees. Now from what I know about that site is that their numb...

Re: In a comprehensive new test, the EmDrive fails to generate any thrust
Yeah, except for Shawyer himself, pretty much everyone else has given up on this now, I think.
Would have been great, but yes, the writing was on the wall.

Re: Helicity Space
Nice one! One of the properties of Helion's reactor design is that FRCs can be translated over great distances without losing stability. They make use of that to physically separate the compression chamber from the injectors and other more sensitive equipment. Helion is accelerating their plasmoids ...

Magnetic mirrors are back?
Ray Sedwick of the U of Maryland gave an interesting presentation on their magnetic mirror concept at the LSI Interstellar Initiative Grants Kickoff Meeting in October. Looks like (again?) a sheared flow and a rotating magnetic field are making a fusion concept more viable. They don't seem to see an...

Helicity Space
Helicity Space is a private fusion venture and member of the FIA that I have until now known very little about. Their concept does actually appear to be very interesting. It is a magneto inertial fusion concept, not unlike what Helion is doing, but with a different plasma configuration and a few oth...

Talking about patent, Helion tweeted today that their patent has been granted for Europe:

Re: 2021 state of the horse race: ITER vs. dark horses
I suspect that all fusion plants will look similar once the auxiliary systems are added in. Everything has trade offs. ITER looks dead commercially. I think that depends on the reactor design and fuel etc. Some (ZAP, Helion, LPPF, am I missing somone?) could be quite a bit smaller than others and s...

Re: 2021 state of the horse race: ITER vs. dark horses
How can 1,200 MWth be "low value heat"? The thermal load will be roughly 50% of that, so around 600MWth distributed more or less over all the machine. Also according the PDF they are expecting a peak heat flux of 1 to 2 MWth/m2 (or 100 to 200 W/cm2). Making a high pressure steam recovery system ove...

Re: 2021 state of the horse race: ITER vs. dark horses
A 30% net electric output is coherent with the expected efficiencies of a direct conversion system we was discussing in the "Z-Pinch Renaissance" thread few months ago. A good chunk of the electric power will need to be used for the following cycle, and most of the heat will be low value heat that ...

So the latest news for TAE is that Da Vinci, their first machine to demonstrate PB11 fusion is now set to begin operation in 2028 (see TAE thread for source). Copernicus is supposed to demonstrate "viability of net energy" by 2024/25 Prospective length for the commercial reactor vessel: 80 meters Po...

All the drawings, charts and the table. At least I can't see them. They are in the version I posted.
