Catalysts would be a great topic for a separate thread.

Thanks, TallDave for posting the discussion. Art Carlson and Dr. Nebel have more to say : Meanwhile with a few $ billion's spent the Tokomaks Are still 10-15 orders of magnitude away [from the necessary conditions for sustained positive output]. This is a bizarre statement considering that the tokam...

The magrid is positive, yes. That's where all the electron energy comes from - you need this to deepen the well, so that electrons don't just sit there right next to the grid. Ions are injected inside the grid and don't see it at all due to Gauss' Law (repulsion from the near side is exactly cancel...

Initially, a pBj reactor might need neutron-resistant materials for side chain reactions. However, IIRC MSimon, you mentioned that a non-maxwellian plasma would have an even lower level of side chain reactions and neutron production than the straight cross-section tables indicate. I don't think igno...

I uploaded really poor pictures of the math for tombo's coil idea , I'm going to have to figure out a better way to do that. This is simple enough I can write it up in pdf pretty quickly so I'll do that when I get a chance. Yeah, the writing can't be read because it's blurry. Not complaining. I've ...

Every effort to restrain big business will only serve to give it and the government more power. Then you are not a Neoconservative : Neoconservatism emphasizes foreign policy as the paramount responsibility of government, maintaining that America's role as the world's sole superpower is indispensab...

I ran the following command: wget -nv -EpkKm http://www.talk-polywell.org/bb/index.php Then I compressed the output (1.1 GB) down to 63 MB and placed it at: http://polywell.nfshost.com/2008_05_13_nooutsidelinks.tar.bz2 Since bandwidth and storage cost me, I'll leave it posted for a week. Keegan, Mik...

Thanks, Joe :) There are easy ways to control the "spidering" hit. For wget: --quota to limit the amount downloaded --wait to limit how fast requests hit the server --limit-rate very rough, but on large files, it can limit network bandwidth So if anyone feels like the server is being abused, please ...

It would be fairly simple to use curl or wget and spider the website (creating a "working" copy that's not a forum, just static HTML). Instead of all of us DDOSing the forum with cron jobs, it might make more sense to ask the administrators what they would like.

Joe? MSimon?

About the placement of ion guns and electron guns, look at the picture of the WB7 at the E=mC2 site. There are some cylinders with cables at the triangular sides, but also a cylinder in the middle of the octagonal front side. This can be these guns, or something else. MSimon, you probably know this...

Will we get to hear more about the results here? Is this to find interested physics students and motivate them to specialize in plasma physics, or is it to get funding and run experiments?

If you start experiments, please post photos! :)

But the idea of "quick and dirty" doesn't apply without a lot of assumptions. I think it will actually be easier to do a brute force calculation than to pursue an analytical solution. But I think over the long run both need to be done along with experiments for a full picture to emerge. OK, so I do...

The 'Net' for Science Collaboration

I'm a slashdot reader... Scientific American is running a major article on Science 2.0 , or the use of Web 2.0 applications and techniques by scientists to collaborate and publish in new ways. "Under [the] radically transparent 'open notebook' approach, everything goes online: experimental protocols...

Re: Antarctic ice area

We no longer keep crop reserves for the seven lean years because we thought warming would go on indefinitely. We are now seeing wide spread crop failures not to mention, significant political failures. (Zimbabwe). Just for the record, most local stores where I live that used to carry 50 lb bags of ...
