Re: General Fusion in the news

I believe they still need another 100 million to actually build the demo reactor.

Re: Small Tri Alpha news blurp

Latest results from Norman: 30 ms steady state plasma, 400 eV electron temperature. From what I understand they have a density of 5x10^12 to 5x10^14 cm^-3. That is OKish, but not Earth shattering. I was honestly expecting a bit more, especially temperature wise, but maybe they will push it further. ...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance

At the amounts of fuel that we are talking about here, tankage mass is of secondary concern, I think. For a mass mission at 0.1g (near) constant acceleration/deceleration, I calculated 70 tonnes, though actually it would be less since you lose fuel mass over time. So probably more like 50 tonnes. Ta...

Re: Richard Nebel's Tibbar Plasma Technologies

They have a section on their website devoted to it. Seems like they got a 3.5 million ARPA-E contract:

Richard Nebel's Tibbar Plasma Technologies

Looks like Richard Nebel is working on a new fusion reactor design. Looks interesting. I wish him the best of luck!

Re: ARPA-E intends to issue a new Funding Opportunity Announcement in November 2019

This is pretty cool! Go ARPA-E! My only question is: Why are concepts that have achieved 10^10 keV *s/m3 not eligible for concept funding? That seems a bit counter productive, doesn't it?

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance

Pardon the platitude but I think we need t dance with the girl we brought to the dance. He3 is not available or a ready source available. IMHO we should strive for PB11 or D-D Well, if you can do D+D, then you can make He3 as a fusion product. That is what Helion is doing with their reactor. First ...

Third-generation fusion fuels 3He + 3He → 4He+ 2 11 p 12.86 MeV 0 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helium-3 What about this reaction mixture? I remember hearing about it but it isn't talked about much. You could get the He3 from the decay of Tritium bred from Lithium as has been discussed, or from the...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance

Just noticed that GG made a mistake in his calculations. He assumed a neutron yield per second. I am pretty sure that they are talking about a neutron yield per shot. One of their shots lasts a few nanoseconds...

I agree. Well, we will see if they put on a different tune in a few years from now.

Re: Spherical Tokamaks

Wasn't there another ST startup in the UK? I haven't heard of another one. There's FIrst Light Fusion but they're trying inertial confinement. Yeah, I know the FLF guys. Not sure how valid their idea is, but I think it is good that people pursue and invest in other approaches. And I just remembered...

Re: Spherical Tokamaks

It seems like companies like TE like this effort. It leaves a lot of room for private 3rd party contributors. I believe that TE would be a good candidate for that. Wasn't there another ST startup in the UK?
