Not sure why you would (very expensively) fight your way up to 40 km when a few thousand cubic metres of Helium will do the job for you...

Re: Dr. Park to speak at UW-Madison
What if a super volcano erupted? What if a 1km meteor struck the earth? What if a virus mutated into a deadly airborne pathogen? What if a super solar flare destroyed all the electronics and put us back into the dark ages? What if there was an alien invasion? What if artificial intelligence science...

Re: Dr. Park to speak at UW-Madison
I think there's a NASA report on the best ones to use. You'll need water and power to keep them lit 24/7. That works for industrialized countries but maybe less well for the third world.mvanwink5 wrote:Use more indoor plants if you are worried about indoor CO2.

Re: Dr. Park to speak at UW-Madison
But why is it again that this is still being pursued here as this is more appropriate to be discussed in general? I'm sure msimon will move it if he sees fit. CO2 is in the news this week: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/08/21/usa-california-carbonauction-idUSL2N0QR2JW20140821 http://www.dailym...

Re: Dr. Park to speak at UW-Madison
Today emissions are 35 bn tonnes CO2. That's from roughly 2bn industrialized inhabitants. So suppose 10bn people emit 5 times that. At the moment CO2 is rising about 2.8 ppm per year. In the worst case scenario, it would be rising at 14 ppm per year. It would rise linearly, because CO2 per head has...

Re: Dr. Park to speak at UW-Madison
I'm getting crotchety in my old age. I object to people who object to plant food. I like plants. Do you have any idea what the minimum amount of plant food in the atmosphere should be? Below 100 PPM the plants suffer Maximum levels for growth are about 1000-1200 PPM Plants will grow in much higher ...

The Islamic religion is not at war with you. Since there hasn't been a Caliph in a while, there's no practical way for the entire religion to be at war. Osama Bin Laden, on the other hand, declared war on America in 1996: Declaration of War against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy P...

Even before Papa Doc came to power, damage from Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and stepped up logging for charcoal production, started a downward slide in the forests of the island. The process has continued to the present, driven by a demand for charcoal for cooking. I have seen estimates that about 98%...
