Re: SpaceX News
Hmmm. “Classified mission” that “failed”? Perhaps they just want folks to THINK it failed.

Re: Mark Duncan has passed ...
Mark Duncan, the fellow who cleaned up and posted many of Dr. Bussard's papers on his Askmar.com website, passed away on the evening of December 23, 2017. Mark did the Polywell an incalculable service by doing this. I have been sending people to his website for years. I have space on mine ... I sup...
Re: NTR fuel
Meta-stable hydrogen would ake a good fuel precisely because the energy needed to break the H2 bond is stored in the fuel. That is quite a bit of additional energy.

Re: Goodbye Tension, Hello Pension
When I was retiring, I was setting up to become a contractor. I said, "I'll take month off then start briging in the BIG bucks". Well, that month stretched just a bit. It has been ~5.5 years and I find I LIKE being retired.

Re: Stuff in Space
The Webb will be a good instrument but they screwed around with it, wound up spending more by trying to delay it. The price is badly bloated. Reminds me of the USS Gerald R. Ford. When NewNews Shipbuilding first provided an estimate for the Ford, it was ~7 years and $7billion." The Navy said "that ...

Re: Elon Musk Is In Bed With Crooks
So if he tries to use solar, does the business stop at night or does he use a lot of his batteries to store (and lose energy from) the solar panels. And how much embedded CO2 will be in that whole sequence of steps?
Re: Go Navy!
IIRC, they CAN'T do it. All the pipe paths they held in reserve to install steam if EMALS didn't work have been released and used. They were getting close when I left.

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )
I'm still not sure where you foresee all the difficulty. Solid salt is brittle. That which hasn't made it to the dump tanks can be easily broken into small pieces and swept up. Then the remainder can be washed up. Clean-up... easy.

Don't see why it woud be "huge in comparison" to anything.paperburn1 wrote:I guess it is all relative, not huge like Fukushima but huge in comparison to the cost of a normal cleanout/up.

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )
On 11 March 2011 Japan suffered its worst recorded earthquake. The epicentre was 110 miles east north east from the of the Fukushima Dai‐ichi (Fukushima‐1) nuclear power site which has 6 Boiling Water Reactors. Turns out that Onagawa Nuclear Power Station was closer to the epicenter, saw greater sh...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )
Speaking of hubris, One of the little-known facts about fukushima was the generators were sealed in a watertight building in the flood zone. In theory even if submerged underwater the buildings retain their integrity and in fact they did. But it was a small little overlooked design flaw that did th...
