Re: 2014 only the hottest year on the cooked books...

You make one incredibly important point. currently we are in a state that our population density is out of proportion with our available energy. If history has shown us anything its that when you reach this level in development; your civilization must find a denser source of energy or fall back to ...

Re: 2014 only the hottest year on the cooked books...

In other words just to end the permanent Ice Age that was "Snowball Earth" it took and estimated CO2 levels 350 X times current levels 13% of the atmosphere; an amount that would be fatal to humans as an aside. That high just to start to nudge the earth back to a "normal" temperature range. This wo...

Re: 2014 only the hottest year on the cooked books...

On an interesting note about Venus's atmosphere is how layered it is. The bottom most layer is composed almost entirely of CO2 and is something like 99% of it's total atmosphere. The pressure is so high that CO2 is no longer a gas, it's become a super critical fluid and behaves accordingly. It's lik...

Re: 2014 only the hottest year on the cooked books...

Let us see now…what is the ultimate known example of greenhouse gas warming via CO2? The planet Venus. Venus is 67 million miles from the Sun; the Earth is 93 million. By the inverse square law: 93 2 /67 2 = 1.93. So Venus gets roughly twice the solar constant Earth gets. So I would expect it to be...

Re: Opposing Prohibition On Christian Grounds

Wasn't quite thinking that far back. I wouldn't equate that with weed though. It's a plant who's consumption was prohibited by an entity of unquestionable authority and wisdom (if your a religious type). The results of which was a human ignoring the authority and eating it anyway. Kind of demonstra...

Re: Since we had this discussion about UAVs and F22s etc...

You couldn't put them too far out though, the delay in communication from a ground based station via satcomm would be too much for target selection and acquisition and you absolutely do not want to give an autonomous device the ability to select it's own targets and kill them. That is one of those a...

Re: Since we had this discussion about UAVs and F22s etc...

I dont agree that it is that big of a problem and clearly neither does the US Airforce. Do not project your beliefs onto the Airforce, your not that good. The Airforce most certainly believes there will always be a need for human pilots, they have zero intention of replacing all human pilots with d...

Re: Since we had this discussion about UAVs and F22s etc...

The numbers our controls guys rattled around for smaller UAVs suggest to me that if your control inputs are half a second late you are just plain doomed. Really big craft could stand longer, but in general they hate any kind of delay, and tens of milliseconds make them cranky. Which argues against ...

Re: Since we had this discussion about UAVs and F22s etc...

SpaceX LEO constellation would be at 1200 km altitude. Speed of light is ~300,000 km a second. With an angle or another satellite for relay, we can maybe get to 10,000 km total distance. That means a latency of 33 ms, nowhere near 1 second. I don't think even the GTO constellations have one second ...

Re: Since we had this discussion about UAVs and F22s etc...

Yep and you can have dozens of operational programs stored that the human operator selects from and directs to the drone. Stuff like intercepting incoming threats, solo or group attacking individual targets, attacking all local targets that fit a specific profile, and so forth. Then you introduce el...

Re: Since we had this discussion about UAVs and F22s etc...

I wonder when the last aircraft carrier will be bought? Imagine a strike group with an E-2D system in an aerostat overhead (24/7 by the way) and a fleet of drones (that could have substantially different takeoff and landing requirements, thus smaller and denser flight decks). Would we still need Ni...

Guaranteed basic income => removal of some reason to work. If you can get what you really want out of life foe what the basic income covers, why get a job? If a few hours a week of work will cover the luxuries you really want, why work more than that? Though if it isn't means tested and the taxes s...

Re: Police Brutality Statistics

I agree, it is probably a bit of both. Under the wrong influence, good people can make terrible decisions. I've always viewed the police as an "adult fraternity" and I think it's the mindset in this groups that cause the trouble. They have an extremely close "honor" system that involved each and ev...
