Re: Dr. Park to speak at UW-Madison

This paper and the talk seems to cover only the small device. My guess would be that we'll hear more about the other experiments later.

Re: Dr. Park to speak at UW-Madison

I'll try to summarize the relevant gleanings briefly: 1) Dr. Park is interested in trying to form the potential well as the next step in the research program. 2) There was a discussion between Dr. Park and Prof. Forest about MHD and the lack of axial symmetry. Dr. Park's conclusion was that it's ver...

Dr. Park to speak at UW-Madison

Hey folks, got this email today from John Santarius. Dr. Park will be speaking at Univ. of Wisc. next week, and I will be in the audience :D . Any questions (scientific ones) you'd like me to ask? "Colleagues, Dr. Jaeyoung Park, President of EMC2, will give a talk on recent cusp-confinement experime...

Re: EMC2 collaborating with other companies?

If you take that exponential decay curve from Kevin's thesis and do a bit of algebra, you will find a particle confinement time of 0.02 ms, which is pretty crappy.

Re: Rick Nebel Discussed DC Transformer Project in Los Alamo

Come on, DeltaV! That's some real wishful thinking. Nebel is not part of the Polywell project anymore, he's basically retired and is tinkering around in his garage with this DC-DC converter based on magnetic reconnection / dynamo just for the fun of it. This much he told me at a conference last year...

Re: Tri Alpha talk

I didn't catch the density from his talk, but looking at their paper, which has most of the same content, it's about 4e19/m^3. The temperatures are thermal. They have a Doppler spectrometer (Ti) and a Thomson Scattering (Te) system. There will of course be a high-energy tail for the ions due to the ...

Re: Tri Alpha talk

My notes from the talk: -150 on staff (!!) -5ms plasma lifetime, presently limited not by instabilities but by ~1ms confinement time (energy, particles) -very reproducible discharges despite dynamic merging procedure -Te ~100eV, Ti ~ 400eV -20keV beam ions orbit passes through edge, important to kee...

Re: Lockheed Martin Skunkworks - Compact Fusion

Clues: -high beta -min-B / good curvature -no plasma current -RF heating -cylindrically symmetric -internal conducting coil -mirror field at the end -"very few open field lines" Sounds like they've copied the LDX somehow, except that it's located inside a strong mirror field. It's kinda like an obla...

Lajado:

Sorry for being snippy. I talked to him at the RFP conference. The gist is that EMC2 is still there w/o him, he's in contact with them, but he's moved on to a different project. He cited personal reasons for his retirement.

Word has it that Nebel has retired from LANL & EMC2, & Tibbar is a low-budget project (related to POPS) he's running in his spare time. Word also is that EMC2 is still going.

Actually, look at the agenda for the 2011 RFP conference at UW Madison - R. Nebel is bringing the same topic here. (I'm at UW now btw. His coauthor J. Finn is actually teaching one of my classes this semester while on sabbatical.) Anyway, hopefully I'll get to rub shoulders with him at some point.
