If you really think the USA is going to collapse I would say the best thing you could do to prepare for that collapse would be to sell your guns and stockpiles of food, cancel your insurance payments to WTSHTF and use the money raised to buy a one-way ticket to Austrailia (after having applied for a...

Anyhow I think the real point I was trying to make was that history tends to teach us that when societies collapse, you don't get disorganise mad-max style hoards of lawless desparadoes. You get organized hoards of lawful (in the sense they make their own law) despardoes. When societies collapses th...

This whole survivalism thing is an American Wild West fantasy, in all but a few instances when societies breakdown, you get civil war, local warlords rise up and then martial law follows. In most cases the winning faction was a political movement that existed before the social breakdown (Think Commu...

The price of nuclear plants is rising as the number built is in decline. It seems like much the same way that an increase in production yields a learning curve, a decrease in production creates a forgetting curve. I agree that nuclear power plant installation needs to be scaled up before it has a ho...

I'm not convinced more nuclear reactors means there will be a greater threat of a terrorist attack. If I was a terrorist and I wanted to blow up a nuclear power plant I'd find one and blow it up (if I could). Nuclear power plants exist now. None have had a meltdown induced by terrorists. Therefore t...

Useful stuff if we're desperate for hydrocarbons to manufacture plastics and petrochemicals, for fuelling cars something tells me the overall fuel cycle involved in mining and transporting the hydrocarbons from Titan to Earth would have a slightly negative EROEI. From the point of view of petrochemi...

They're not claiming this is some industrial process for producing hydrocarbons and creating net energy at the same time. Their saying that the original energy input of the oil we find today was of a geothermal nature, (water reacting with rocks far beneath the earth's surface where high temperature...

Report on Geothermal Oil Generation: Is this for real?
I found this report where the author claims to have experimentally produced hydro-carbons at high temperatures using only FeO, Ca(CO3) and H2O at pressures of 50kbar and 1500 Celsius.

There doesn't seem to be that much between them even wind seems to be only 50% over and a above the chepest energy source (which is not enough to disastrously break the economy) Nuclear and geothermal seem to come out way ahead. Maybe the cost of Hydro is the cost for building new projects, I believ...
