The TELSTAR-18 mission was successful <yawn>.
Although they lost points on the 1st Stage landing, more off center than usual I think (Judges give it 9.2)
Let's see how fast they recycle this booster for flight again.

Re: Crime and Punishment: Oklahoma (& Texas) style!
The biggest fault I saw in the work was no accounting for experience / training levels of the operators, either in mass or by weapon type. Novices tend to move towards certain weapons in my experience. Cost being one of the larger factors. Additionally, while he touched on round types, he did not re...

Re: Crime and Punishment: Oklahoma (& Texas) style!
For shotgun lethality, #1 or #2 shot tends to do better in tactical usage. This is mostly due to holding a tighter pattern at tactical ranges over #00. In close, #00 hits harder, and quickly degrades as distance goes up. Hot load .45 has always been a personal favorite, such as what we used in the M...

Re: Strange magnetic field source.
I think it is dependent on the core make up and layering. If it is active nuclear, which it seems so, having a strong field due to circulating layers does not seem far fetched.

Re: Lockheed Martin’s Compact Fusion Reactor
So, in layman's terms, larger would be better More B Field is better, to a point. And that point is probably closer than most realize. Think in terms of squeezing something between your fingers, you reach a point quickly where more squeeze does not produce more results other than your effort. The s...

Re: Lockheed Martin’s Compact Fusion Reactor
Increasing magnet power has an exponential diminishing return. It is somewhat of a red herring in regards to more magnet means better fusion with better containment. The real containment happens with adiabetic behaviour.
Just saying.

Re: Lockheed Martin’s Compact Fusion Reactor
It concerns me that they don't seem to understand the difference between the words "can" and "could". And to answer the D/T question, yes, it is a very hot chain with significant activation, embrittlement, and flux concerns. I also have to wonder about patent overlap with Polywell. Afterall, it see...

Dang! Missed it. On travel in DC. Been pretty busy. Had some great discussions with a former Senator of note as well as a former AF Chief of Staff. We even talked about space.

Re: Water based propulsion for deep space efforts
The irony in all this is that space propulsion is easy. The real problem is we have no patience for moving about in terms of cosmic scales.

First launch I haven't seen in a while. It is like NASCAR without wrecks. What fun is that? In any event, they deserve the honors accorded for coming so far, and so fast. I am excited to see further Falcon Heavy progress, as well as BFR. Being on the ground for a BFR boost will be SPECTACULAR. I'll ...
