Re: Hydrostor - compressed air energy storage

The average level of CO2 in the atmosphere over the last 600M years is about 3x current levels. Relatedly, that’s the level growers arrange in their greenhouses. The idea that we should restore CO2 levels to that of a ‘golden age’ is therefore wrong. It is also hubristic. Co2 emissions have risks. I...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

I don't take naturally to pessimism, but I suppose integrity demands skepticism of things I like as well as things that I think are are bat-****-crazy. Anyway: watching the SOFE presentation gave me a little pause. Did we not hear that the existing divertor will last 10's of thousands of pulses? Tha...

Re: Tokamak Energy news

Well, yes. They do say cryoplant power is a leading power consumer, but don’t elaborate.

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Hi. I don't endorse this linked article, and indeed I think the Ad Hom attack on Eric Lerner is quite outrageous, if par for the course on the left. However, I did glance back in early notes here and see aggressive claims from years ago. In that context the article includes a useful wee catalog of t...

It is net electricity. So not just net power. Though for their machine the two are really closely related.
Ok, that correction makes the question clearer. In a second (for the 50MW device) they put in X joules of electrical energy and get out 50M + X. My question is, what is X?

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Thanks, that’s helpful and also explains my confusion a little.

Have they indicated power in and power out, as well as net power?

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Have I gathered correctly that they will be putting 50MW on the grid, or did that come to me in a dream?

Re: Tokamak Energy news

Three more press releases from the UK government. The first links to the next two. The second opens a consultation on regulation of fusion, which is open until this Christmas Eve. Members of the public can contribute. The third is the UK government fusion energy strategy. https://www.gov.uk/governme...

Re: "Former fusion scientist on why we won't have fusion power by 2040"

...and it was very helpful! Winding back to the question above, from the point of view of operating conditions Qsci goes from 1 to Infinity in a reasonably narrow range of nt. Qsci = 20 is very close to Q=Infinity in terms of operating conditions. So based on the paper my answer to my question would...

Re: "Former fusion scientist on why we won't have fusion power by 2040"

The only way I can make this thread makes sense is that most of the 4He as well as the n energy us lost to the plasma.

Anybody got a book reference that explains this stuff?

Re: "Former fusion scientist on why we won't have fusion power by 2040"

After I posted above I decided that the answer for QMax was probably ‘infinite’. Focussing on a DT plasma, 20% of fusion power is charged particles, which one would think would heat the plasma. It’s tempting to think that Brehmstralung losses need to be replaced, but that’s bunk: the device is therm...
