We don't need a full blown FRC corner.
An FRC thread (or two) under say theory (not under general because it really is a technical discussion) would do the trick easily and nicely.
I would certainly follow it.

The EPA has a freeware program called Visual Plume that calculates the dispersal of a plume of any effluent, say brine, with inputs for currents, current gradients, temp, temp gradients, etc. You can easily calculate the rate at which your plume of brine or fresh water, if you're mainly removing dis...

If power costs approach 'too cheap to meter', reverse-osmosis desalination may be by-passed due to the expensive membranes and bio-fouling... Reverse osmosis desalination works very well thank you. Any system has costs and maintenance. Fouling is controllable by proper design and intelligent preven...

Sounds slippery, especially when it gets a little leaked oil and a drizzle of rain emulsified by thousands of passing tires.

Wheeeee!

Microwaves heat water by depositing energy in a bending mode. IIRC I had thought they tuned the frequency to that mode but once you mention em spectrum allocations the true situation becomes clear. Any time politics enters the picture any optimization with physical reality is compromised. Ionized el...

Thanks, The above article says that efficiency is pretty good but the membrane cost needs to come down by a factor of 100 for the capital cost to be affordable. And that is using mine brine that is almost 3 times the concentration of seawater. Also http://www.energyrecovery.com/ has a mechanical sys...

Job Lead

Here is a lead for a job in plasma physics in Cambridge MA that might suit someone here.
For what it is worth.

When I worked in semiconductors we had a 40 foot H2 tank permanently parked at the loading dock right next to the one for N2. There were simple safety procedures. And we followed them carefully for obvious reasons. Other stuff we had was much nastier. Only trained people could handle it. All piping ...

And Helium doesn't add cost? Hydrogen safety is workable. They even manage to use it to cool the large generators (up to 600MW) in (probably all) major power plants. We will be needing it on that side of the plant anyway. I think cooling the SC with liquid H2 and the other layers with gas H2 might b...

Energy storage would be a better use. Interesting idea. Safer than high pressure tanks. Less excavation and real estate than pipes and hills. You would just need 3 tanks (salty water, pure water, concentrated brine) and the RO equipment between them. I currently work with seawater reverse osmosis pl...

Yes it is reversible. I did a tiny demonstration as a senior chemistry project. Two major problems as an energy source. 1) disruption of wetlands migrating fish etc. 2) it is a dilute power source i.e. you have to process many many gallons of seawater to get significant power. Lots of smaller ones. ...

When I worked with epi-reactors (semiconductor processing) I was all the time having to explain no-this-is-not-radioactive, it is just chemicals. People would hear that word and go all red-alert on me and I had to smooth their feathers all the time. Their "reactions" told me which people NOT to tell...

There is also a reversible increase in SC properties with pressure for some SC's. (MgB2 ?)
The kinds of fields we are generating could if supported correctly provide some serious compression to the SC and enhance the Jc.
It is one more tweak that might help enough to be worth the trouble.
