Congratulations to EMC2 and all who have been pulling for them. What a relief, compared to the state of things a few years ago.

I forget what WB-8 and 9 are s'posed to do. Is there any call for a continuous-power machine yet? 8 mill would help with that.

much of the U-235 in the little boy weapon was from a heavy duty mass-spectrometer that did uranium enrichment. It was known as a calutron

I was under the impression that the calutron was way too slow, and they made the stuff by gaseous diffusion at Oak Ridge.

4096 X increase in power? B^4*R^3?

Sorry. Now I saw the rest of your post.

Great news, but no real details. What's different about this one?

Interesting, their use of cameras. I'm not up on plasma instrumentation, but I woulda figured some kind of electronic probe would be better for nanosecond timescale data gathering.

my apologies for doubting chrismb's calculation. However, that's assuming the alphas are evenly distributed in the chamber. Since we're going to have superconductors and LHe(?) anyway, maybe we could condense them with cold.... or electrostatically. Corral them in a part of the chamber, then suck 'e...

Incidentally, I think this flux of 3E21 alpha particles would require a pumping speed of 120 billion litres per second to maintain a 1E-9 torr vacuum.
You may wish to check your math.

I find it ironic that I, as an informed skeptic, am forced to defend him and his right to do research.
This thread's gone a-wandering. I was referring to the original poster and the superwavefusion site.

Any knucklehead can make a website. Popping off claims like 2500% energy gain without proof, without references to published results, puts you squarely in the Baloney League. The greatest contribution of Pons & Fleishmann is not the work on LENR, but the lesson of going public with nothing to show.

Would be nice if they could post a correction... something a little more level headed.

But here's a question: could we eventually, because of an abundance of 100MW polywell reactors, redesign the power grid in such a way that distribution becomes more economical, too?

It is way too late for that. If the DOE doesn't have some one monitoring this site - I'd be very surprised. Instapundit has mentioned Polywell a couple of times. He has 200,000 readers. I'm betting there is at least 1 ITER guy in the bunch. I have left comments on Polywell at the "Unofficial ITER F...
