Re: Electrodynamic Inertial Fusion Generators and Fission

True. Was just surprised to see it show up. Too bad all that stuff is all gone. But I've not been entirely idle since then. On something not entirely unrelated. But still not quite ready to open it to scrutiny.

Here is a teaser though: http://www.fusor.net/board/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7917

Re: Electrodynamic Inertial Fusion Generators and Fission

There's my high beta equilibrium plot from several years ago, misattributed.

Re: Streaming Instability? Sup Brah!

Maybe you could setup a simple numerical model. One radial dimension, and one radial velocity, thus only 2-D in phase space. You would setup the outer boundary so that the particles are simply reflected back: f(Rmax, -v) = f(Rmax, +v). You would assume some the background field with negative potenti...

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

10^17 is just a number where it became hard to keep the ion and electrons separated. The fields in the cusps were such that ions would simply stream out. But I don't claim what I did was comprehensive or conclusive.

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

So, your answer is that it IS bad, but that there are workarounds to bad things. That is fine, but different than your claim that there is no bad field curvature. Tokamak's simply have to live with it. As to a polywell, I spent quite a bit of time several years ago modeling a polywell type scenario....

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

How would I know what physical principles you are thinking of. One reason for k < 0 as bad is the basic Rayleigh–Taylor instability. Now, how is that not bad?

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

Of course it matters to me what I am interested in. I am not interested in throwing around vague words. If you can't give me physical principles, then this is a waste of time. And I do not think tokamak experts are idiots. I wonder how different the conversation would be though if one of them were h...

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

Defining curvature as k = n dot ( ( b dot grad ) b ), where n is unit vector pointing out of plasma, and b is field aligned unit vector. I would claim that all things being equal, k > 0 is better than k < 0. Are you saying that you disagree with that statement? Why? You have to point to some reason ...

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

I don't know how many times I can say that I think there is nothing physically wrong with Tokamaks. I have nothing against the idea of them, except that they are big, expensive, and ultimatly I don't think anyone will ever build one for commercial purposes. That is why continuously comparing everyth...

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

That is why I said all things being equal it would be better, because it would be a more efficient use of field, which is proportional to coil costs. Just because there is good evidence that tokamaks can exceed break-even by making them big enough doesn't mean anyone will ever be able to afford to b...

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

I am pretty sure most of the heat loss in a tokamak goes outward (toward larger radius). This is why the outboard diverter strike plate requires more attention than the inboard one. It gets more of the heat load. It may be just a coincidence that the outboard plasma surface has bad curvature while t...

Re: Muslims calling for the Death of all Athiests.

It seems to me that it is the same difference between using positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. In one case you are already in pain because of something else, and the drug can make that pain go away. The other case is that you take the drug for some reason, and from then on you are in...

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

In flat geometry "convex vs. concave" and commonly if to consider toroids which are not flat, namely gradient defines dependence of field strength on position. And not curvature. Well at least you seem to have corrected yourself, even if you can't admit when you were wrong: gradient != curvature. T...

Re: US Senators: What Will ITER Really Cost?

Of course the profiles depend on the machine. I never said anything contrary to that. I was merely pointing out that your conclusions on field gradient and field curvature is only valid in a vacuum. We are not talking about vacuums here. We are talking about plasmas with pressures on order of atm's....

Re: Muslims calling for the Death of all Athiests.

Emotion is essential to reason. We are neural networks not digital computers. But the network must be trained. Also you might want to revise your whole conventional outlook. I don't believe there is such a thing as addiction. People in chronic pain will chronically do things that relieve it. Our un...
