Implications for heavy construction?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe nowadays, most large, heavy construction equipment (cranes, bulldozers, those giant chainsaw-looking things that dig trenches, etc) are predominantly diesel powered, are they not? I've thought a lot about how you move various types of energy consumption...

It's also possible it will have some military advantages that don't translate into commercial viability. You mean like a particle cannon? How about 1,000 ton (weight of cargo) aircraft capable of water takeoff and 250 mph cruising speed? How about aircraft (like bombers or something) which could ha...

Re: Cost scale-down on Tokamak?

Does a commercial power plant need to be as physically large as ITER? .... My understanding is that yes, a commercial plant needs to be a little large than ITER. I believe DEMO is only supposed to be ~ 20% larger (in volume?), so a commercial plant would probably be a little larger than that. I jus...

Cost scale-down on Tokamak?

edit: I got confused about which forum I was posting in, this probably should be in theory, or maybe general, instead of news. If a moderator wants to move it, that might be appropriate. Sorry. I notice that many of the posters on this forum view ITER as a large black hole, and view it as never bein...

I think I should maybe clarify one point. When I describe the Ions as orbitting, I'm picturing a very long, eccentric elliptical orbit, not a mostly circular orbit. But, the reason I call it an orbit is that, I don't think it could *possibly* be a straight line, could it? In particular, as Ions coll...

Re: Making sure I have the basics right

... The polywell uses a very powerful magnetic field (well, configuration of overlapping magnetic fields, plural) to confine a lot of electrons at the center of the reactor. Almost, but not quite. Polywell uses magnetic fields to protect a positively charged grid which together confine elec... Ahh,...

Making sure I have the basics right

Hey all, I hope you won't mind me double checking my assumptions here. I think I understand the basic theory behind the polywell, but after reviewing some of the FAQs, I'm still not 100% sure my understanding is correct, so let me lay this out, and make sure I've at least got the basics right: The p...

"You're so vain, you probably think this post is about you." Anyhow, with regards to waste products, I think it comes down to the fact that most of us think it's easier/more statistically probable to successfully contain something highly radioactive for a short period of time, than to contain someth...

Luckily, copy/paste has never exhibited dyslexia on my computer. Seriously, you *typed* the URL?

Getting back to the original topic, I've been thinking some more, and I could definitely see a hybrid approach in areas where there is never enough water (CA, NM, AZ, NV, Middle East, North Africa, etc). You already mentioned AWGs being used in Saudi Arabia, I'm just extending the idea, because chea...

Pardon my ignorance - what is backflow, and what does that have to do with the EPA? backflow occurs when i flush a fire hydrant line outside your home and your line sucks water/air into the system, think venturi. Now imagine if that open line sucked in wastewater, or some other contaminant. -snip- ...

Pardon my ignorance - what is backflow, and what does that have to do with the EPA? For urban areas, I suppose large storage of water could be a problem. For more suburban and rural areas, your 'storage' could be a pond in the backyard that you also swim and fish in. Or a large underground tank. For...

I'll bite. . . In places too arid, I suppose an AWG would be a good solution. I think, however, in places like Ohio or Washington (state), where you get a lot of rain, it would make more sense to combine the ancient and honorable cistern with a water purifier (I'm thinking purifying the captured rai...

Fusion vs. Fission

I've been thinking about this recently. . . Is it "too soon" for fusion? Here's what I mean: There has been work in the past (c.f. Integral Fast Reactor), and receently (TerraPower's Travelling Wave Reactor idea) on fission reactors that can use our current 'nuclear waste' from PWRs and BWRs in such...

So, I just came across an article about the EU planning to spend over 400Bn Euro on Sahara solar projects , but they can't come up with $15Bn for fusion research? I'm not saying I think ITER is a great use of money, BUT, it seems like the EU has plenty of money when it wants to. All of a sudden, 15B...
