Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Dave, the speed of the plasma as I remember is accelerated to 1 million mph, so the pulse length is very short, so curent flow is huge (look at the conductors to the coils). You might recall that the power electronics capability is only recent if that gives you some reference. To calculate the time ...

Re: ZAP Energy News

Plenty of time to have instabilities, Q(science)>1 is just the start, plenty more ramp to go to commercial. Still, why take the gloomy Gus doubter position for no reason? And if there is a stability issue, likely there is a workaround. On the other hand, Helion does not have the plasma stability iss...

Re: ZAP Energy News

Call me pedantic, but saying they won’t hit breakeven this year when it’s December 26 isn’t breaking my heart… Based on current capability, no matter running into early trouble delivering the current into an actual device pinch, they are close to proving their ability to reach breakeven. We see tha...

Re: ZAP Energy News

"We have not and we will not hit break-even this year," a Zap Energy spokesperson said.
SJ's comment:
This might unfortunately be true, though
I wonder if this is a matter of ready to confirm & publish as it seems their FuseQ device test amps is high enough?

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

lol if they don't even need SC magnets and can harvest 90% of the fusion energy as electricity via plasma currents then even LWRs are are going to be obsolete overnight, let alone fusion competitors with low-beta SC designs As soon as I found out Helion was able to extract the plasma energy directl...

Re: SpaceX News

Shock wave is gigantic. I wonder if there is reflection from the tower or the vertical tanks (dented again)? Of course tank walls are flexible so any reflected shock wave would be expected to effect the entire ship with any tile weakness being found such as the section weld lines where there are no ...

Re: SpaceX News

It was a bit scary how many tiles came off the Starship. Hopefully they have a path ahead for dealing with that. As I understand it, there is a procedure to test tiles in the weld sections of the Starship for adequate adhesion where pins for securing tiles are not applied. However, that tile adhesi...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Wire length between capacitors and aluminum rings has to be measured along with controlling pathway to avoid inductance differences even though it is DC (it is timed, pulsed DC).

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Yes, of course. The wire must be intended to connect the coils to the capacitor banks. Here is a picture: https://spectrum.ieee.org/fusion?utm_campaign=climatetechsub The high voltage explains the structural glass insulator construction of the machine we see in photo. It is really a marvel of techno...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

There are many motor repair shops that specialize in making coils including vacuum epoxy impregnation of the coils. Any big city can be expected to have one or more such shops. Capacitor manufacturing is more specialized, so making their own is understandable.

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Received a massive shipment of cable - over a megameter in total! Our team has meticulously hipot tested every 500-meter spool, ensuring they're all set for installation on Polaris.
They just got their magnet wire so lots of work. I was surprised that they make their own magnet coils.

Re: ZAP Energy News

High current electrode erosion is an old industrial issue with working solutions. There is however more work for Zap because the electrode shape is important. I doubt we will get details on what exactly they are doing until they patent what ends up working. Technological advances always have the sam...

Re: ZAP Energy News

From what I have seen there is serious work in progress, parallel teams doing the prototyping, actual hardware with success being reported on all aspects. This is not a vaporware company scamming fools out of hundreds of millions, with shady researchers.
