Re: 2014 Dark Horse Trifecta Year?

... So, although the triple product is an excellent metric, it would seem to me it is useful only if resolution of the down stream issues are believable ... The triple product only says anything about the physics, not the engineering feasibility. It is almost certain that the first few generations ...

Re: A question about vacuum chambers

I have never had personal experience with anyone using dry helium to backfill. However, helium is a standard tool to check for leaks. It is a small atom that easily squeezes through cracks. It is also generally not found naturally in atmosphere making it a good 'tracer'. So, you bleed bits of He aro...

Re: A question about vacuum chambers

... Anyway, IIRC the reason to back fill is to dry out the chamber. ... This is the correct answer. At a molecular level, water, nitrogen, oxygen, and other things stick to most surfaces. You don't notice this every day because this is a very small amount, a few atoms thick. This is called adsorptio...

Re: 20 years away, and always will be

Yes, you're correct. I was sloppy with the use of the term 'ignition'. It is not strictly required for net gain, Q>1. An IEC style device would never reach ignition (nor would it need to).

earning how tub-boat asteroids into lunar orbits for the purpose of exploration and mining That *is* wild! And surprising. It implies a lack of confidence in terrestrial sources, including under-sea sources. Maybe the space boys (and girls) will come up with something brilliant (a ore-capacity spac...

Re: particle simulation using fast multiple method

Here are the most basic tests for confirming your B-field is working correctly with particles. Define a uniform B-field and send off a single particle with a known velocity. If everything is correct, you will get a circular orbit. Check for -Constant radius -Plane of orbit perpendicular to both fiel...

Re: particle simulation using fast multiple method

i'm working on testing the magnetic fields now. not nearly as easy to verify as electric fields... I mean that if you get your magnetic fields working, run something simple like a cylindrical solenoid. Let us know the dimensions etc. and I'll run the same problem on established modeling software so...

EDIT: apparently this forum doesn't parse latex, see attached for compiled version Plasma resistivity is given fundamentally by \vec{E} + \vec{V} X \vec{B}= \eta*\vec{j} where E is the vector electric field, V is the velocity vector, B is the vector electric field, eta is the resistivity, and j is ...
