Re: 1st Superconducting High-beta Device
That is an issue, and not many solutions to mitigate it.

cylindrical (2-d) quasi-symmetry as opposed to spherical (3-d) quasi-symmetry.tannerhorne wrote:

presumably the confinement is considerably worse, which suggests the device is used for researching things that don't need really high confinement times.
hence my next questions.

Re: 1st Superconducting High-beta Device
Ok I see what you mean, I would say closer to spherical than not. The biconic cusp arrangement is fairly symmetrical. Yes that is also correct, long containment was not the goal on that device. The first generation satisfied two purposes, to come up to equal capability of all previous and current work and to demonstrate surpassed technical capability using HTS.
That being completed, 2nd gen is for optimization. 3rd gen is hopefully where some magic happens. 1 gen/year would be ideal but you know, its really hard.

The second generation high-beta core region will have a working volume of over 400 cubic inches, a 6000% increase over the first generation.
Meanwhile, it will be multiple versions before LM catches up to a superconducting prototype, which we demonstrated over a year ago.

Horne Technologies will be donating resources to educate the public on fusion at the Denver Maker's Faire. If you are in the region stop by and check it out!

How so?The second generation will conclusively determine feasibility of the technology

Re: 1st Superconducting High-beta Device
I think you should be looking at efficiency vice size.
While size does bear on efficiency, it is more appropriate to say that efficiency is the horse, and size is the cart.
So looking at electron confinement efficiency is key.
After that, it is the efficiency regarding driving a well in support of heating the fuel for fusion conditions.
For the first problem, you may want to play with different configurations.
There is a limit to which magnetic pressure provides utility for confinement. It is not as simple as dial it up, and confinement gets better. There is a diminishing return.
For the second, which is not useful to pursue without the first solved, this may entail playing with approaches to heating as well as fuel types.
The key point here is that if you spend too much energy driving the well (heating the fuel), the power out may not be supportive.
Looking forward to your work.
