Of particular interest to me was the "fusion never" graph in Part 1 of the interview. Dean explains how simply keeping a program going does not necessarily make progress towards the actual goal.

Tim,

Fusion Power associates has remained in the background of the fusion research world for a long time. They have done allot to push ICF and the tokamaks. In the late 70's and early 80's they helped push the magnetic mirror program. They act as a bridge between washington and the labs where the work is done, like NRL, LLNL, SNL, LANL, Universities, ect...

NIF seems to be pushing to their new plan forward of systematically trying to find ignition. I do not know how FPA feels about the polywell. In the past, they have taken a dim view of inertial electrostatic fusion.

Stephen O. Deans book "Search for the Ultimate Energy Source: A History of the U.S. Fusion Energy Program" was released in January 2013. I have not read it, but it looks interesting.
