doubtful. the plasma can't really tell the difference. had to triple the chamber radius on this now that the coils are much bigger. and i didn't scale down the amp turns proportionally to the amount of wire, so the total current and mag fields are stronger than the reference wb-6 sim.rjaypeters wrote:hanelyp's winged octahedron more complete:
It might be interesting to compare this list's performance with the quick and dirty.
looks like you got all the segments and the directions right. thankfully. there's no such thing as "facing coils" in this config, so i wouldn't even know how to go about validating it piece-by-piece.
kind of hard to tell what's going on, but it looks like it does lead to better confinement. at the cost of a much larger chamber, however.
video uploading now.

rjp, the doedec has a minor imperfection in either the 3rd or 4th coil, and a major one in either the 7th or 8th.

they shouldn't need to be very big. fairly small, actually. just big enough so that they can magnetically shield themselves, but not too big such that you'll need a much larger container or have to run a lot of current through them. likewise their separation from the magrid should be sufficient to provide good space and a smooth curvature for recirculation, but not so far that their effective is substantially diminished. other than that they should be right in the middle of the line cusps. disruptors are cross to the line cusps (+), i.e. the plane of the coil is normal to the line of the cusp. on a convertor, it's just like the other magrid coils: the plane is normal to the radial line that goes through its center. all other paramters i imagine would be the same, just its orientation would be different. so just rotated 90 degrees.rjaypeters wrote:Modeling and segmenting priority list:

the thing is doubt they'll change the visual picture very much. they'd probably only make a difference if any in near beta=1 conditions. and the only way that would show up is slightly different confinement times. so point is its pointless to model if you're not accumulating the electron loss energies. which i'm not, _yet_.
another interesting option would be sort of a "chain-link" polywell. i.e. put the cusp disruptors _around_ the close approach of adjacent coils, and make their size the same as the coils (or nearly so) that would clearly by interesting. though how do you pick the orientation of the chain links? ideally it would be as symmetric as possible. asymmetry would probably create an escape path.

This might help to localize where my errors lie:

re: Octahedron size and winged octahedrons
I read a (Tom Ligon?) post awhile back describing how superconducting currents are created and from the post I deduced perhaps the superconducting material must also leave the chamber. So I came up with the twelve-coil octahedron (erroneously called the sixteen-coil octahedron #17 on the modeling list).
Red = current entering chamber, green = current leaving chamber.
A question: the two pairs of coils entering at each cardinal point will repel symmetrically. Will opposite polarities attract? If so, is that useful?
Can this arrangement be considered more compact than the winged octahedron?

awesometastic. still 2 minor imperfections which you'll see in the video (one is definetely 3rd coil), but too minor for the plasma to see so it's fine by me as is.
i'm uploading a video now. i lowered the amp turns a little bit from the reference wb-6 run (which was 1E5.292 amp turns) cause there's more wire in this config. i didnt do the math so i dont know if its even close to proportional. but in any case it looks great. you can that it has a lot more point cusps and as it continues to push out, well after a short while it just looks like a fuzzy sphere. and it looks like it confines great. makes me think bussard might have underestimated the confinement improvement in going to a doedec. but then again there's more grid surface area and i'm not modeling that right now.

yes. opposite polarity will attract. it's actually a consequence of lorentz force and induction. not as simple as "north + south pole" one might think of it as the field lines try to minimize their curvature. anyways yeah it's useful mechanically in the sense that those in and out parts are going to attract each other in a ring-like way so mechanically it's quite stable. just have to make sure you can keep them separated, esp. at high field strengths.rjaypeters wrote:re: Octahedron size and winged octahedrons
A question: the two pairs of coils entering at each cardinal point will repel symmetrically. Will opposite polarities attract? If so, is that useful?
Can this arrangement be considered more compact than the winged octahedron?
the design would definetley be more compact than the hanelyp. though now that i think of it i suppose it might not hurt to just have the outer part of the coils on the hanelp go all the way to the chamber walls. i was thinking it'd be more compact to make them semi-circles on the outside rather than chamfered squares. well now that's all the more reason, assuming a spherical chamber.
i've become fascinated w/my chain-link polywell idea. one'd have to come up w/the right geometry, first thou.
