Web site becoming unresponsive more often

Post by DeltaV »

Talk-Polywell.org is becoming unresponsive (as in spinning-circle) more and more often. When I check other sites they don't have this problem.

Is debugging code causing this, or are we seeing the beginning phases of suppression by nefarious forces?

Seconded. In fact, I got an Internal Server Error after a 60 second hang when trying to reply to this post. The site's not unusable or anything, but the hangs are definitely annoying.

Been happening to me as well.

The server 500 error I've been seeing are typically due to a problem accessing the database the forums come from. It may be Neferious Forces (TM) but as far as I know its more likely to be a problem with the database, or its server if different than the webserver the site lives on. Another forum I visit was having the same problem and it turned out the database server had either a failing drive in the RAID array, or a failing RAID controller (can't remember which now, as its been a couple years).

I agree that a database issue seems like the most likely culprit, but given that it's been happening since the upgrade, my guess is that it's a difference in how this version of phpbb interacts with the database rather than an issue with the database itself. I run a few dozen sites myself, and I dread major version upgrades.

With access to read the error log and site code I could probably diagnose the problem. The database timing out is a possible culprit.

I've seen the errors before the upgrade, just not as often. They are definitely happening more frequently since the upgrade. The question is, is that due or coincidental to the upgrade.

With the DOS attcks on the net lately I would vote for Timeout as well. I have had similier issues elsewhere. Google Spamhaus VS cyberbunker

I'd heard of a case, years ago, where Spamhaus identified a domain as blackhat, and had that identification confirmed by a DDoS attack. I haven't kept up to date on this front of the war, being busier protecting against forum spam.

Site response is really slow and it has been for a few days (week, 2 weeks?). Is there a reason? Is someone working on it?
Counting the days to commercial fusion. It is not that long now.

The slowdown is sporadic. Sometime the site is extremely snappy.

My offer to look over the error log for a diagnosis stands.

If it is a database issue the error log should show it plainly enough (e.g., timeout connecting to <databasename>).

T-P still locks up frequently. Just now, it was for about 2 minutes.

Any progress?

I'm wondering, what database does the site use? If sqlite I have to wonder if it handles the scale of the site well.
