Iran Commander: We Have Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles
The Safir missile is capable of transporting a satellite into space and indeed a ballistic missile that can reach beyond the earth's gravity into orbit. The missile has twice been vertically shot over the earth's atmosphere, the editorial says, "but if one day Iran decides that this missile should be shot parallel to the earth's orbit, the missile will actually be transformed into an intercontinental ballistic missile (that) has the capability to destroy targets in other continents."

Anything that can reach orbit, of necessity, can de facto be used to do a ballistic or semi-ballistic trajectory to anywhere on the planet.

Are the Iranians going to claim they have the technology to make the sky blue now, too?

Either. They have been trying or doing this sort of stuff for years. Of course they will go full press to deny it. Just like any other time they have had their hand caught in the cookie jar.

It does however speak to the internal fragmentation that is generally not well understood here in the west about them. They are similar to China in that bent, right hand, left hand, brain, mouth, eyes, all on their own program.

One wonders about some of the timing. We've apparently known about the plot for months. We sprang the trap on Sept 28, one week after the hikers were released.

We're still guessing who is behind this plot. Somebody in Quds, obviously, but we don't know how high this goes. Possibly this is the result of an ambitious mid-level wanna-be revolutionary. Or not.

However, I also see a very strong likelihood Quds is behind the capture of the American hikers. Their capture was almost certainly an ambush, and they may have been deliberately led across the border by a guide working with Iran, if indeed they ever actually crossed the border. From the start they were branded as spies. One could imagine that if we'd caught actual Iranian bomb plotters here before their release that the hikers would be facing jacked up charges by now.

There's a new travel advisory out, so maybe the Iranians will make a connection between the hikers release and the timing of the charges. Then they decide to grab more hostages, call them spies, and use them to prevent repercussions for the bomb plot.

Wow, "Intercontinental Missiles"! They can shoot at Egypt (Africa) from Iran (Asia) or at Russia (Europe). I guess that is intercontinental. Can they shoot antipodal?

Kiteman,

You left out Israel.

There's an old Tom Lehrer song about nuclear proliferation that goes something like this:

Egypt want to get one too, just to use on you-know-who.
So Israel's getting tense, wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our Shepherd," says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb.

Trust me, it was a lot funnier when it was not true.

Israel is on the same continent as Iran, so that missile wouldn't be "INTER"continental! :)
I left out Saudi Arabia and all Iran's other not so friendly neighbors for the same reason.

They may be on the same continent, but according to each other they are on different planets.

Would that make it a Inter-planetary weapon?

As for the real capabilities, according to an Iranian General, they can hit any where, because they can go orbital.

Of course, the reality of that is not even suspect, as they do not have to ability to do an accurate de-orbit or controlled descent. In fact, the de-orbit bit is even suspect given lift capacity. They can't even control a bird as it LEO's, they do not have 360 coverage, nor can they go HEO or GEO.
These guys are clowns with expensive props.

While we are on the subject, Iran Shot down flight 800.

It was retaliation for the the shooting down of Iran Air Flight 655 by the USS Vincennes. Clinton ordered investigators to state a different cause because he didn't want to panic flyers and wreck the aviation industry. (Or go to war with Iran, which would have been DEMANDED by an angry public.)

We should have beaten Iran into a bloody pulp back in 1978. Once again, THANK YOU JIMMY CARTER!

Benjamin Netanyahu seeks cabinet support for Israeli strike on Iran

The reports of Mr Netanyahu pushing for a military strike on Iran came after days of renewed public discussion among Israeli commentators about the possibility that the Jewish state would take unilateral military action against Iran.

UK military steps up plans for Iran attack amid fresh nuclear fears

Image
The Ministry of Defence believes the US may decide to fast-forward plans for targeted missile strikes at some key Iranian facilities. British officials say that if Washington presses ahead it will seek, and receive, UK military help for any mission, despite some deep reservations within the coalition government.
