What you want to find out is what is happening in the plasma. i.e. the intermediate stuff since the "hidden" scene is known. And it is a pulsed time of flight technique. Shorter pulses giving better definition. What can you find out with 250 uSec pulses? In an acoustic medium a fair amount. At light speed? Not much.
