I think that both Russia and China have too much to lose if Iran goes nutjob. Achmadinijad is a very loose cannon and if Iran should actually test a nuclear device then the stakes go way up. An Iranian nuclear device means that Israel will have to be prepared to burn Iran to the ground on a moment's...

Another thing to add is that while Jacobs legitimately attacks military procurement and engineering methods the real reason the smokestack industries took as large a hit as they did was the great increase in the Federal drain to fund such Progressive pets as the Great Society and the War On Drugs.

Simon, Be prepared for a couple of months of some very good reading. Jacobs was one of the most insightful people around. After this book, read her three city books and then go and look a Chicago in a whole different way. I'm going to have to take a closer look at her newer books as they look very i...

I think you are right on - NASA has lots of huge chambers that pull down to 10^-8 or better. At some point the outer wall doesn't matter, it's the inner coil size that matters. If a tank has the shape of a cylinder it should be fine. Easier to maintain too. JC - yikes! I guess some people have to l...

Dr Mike When I worked for the DOE Accelerator lab I delegated to design a Ultra High Voltage conduit from the Ultra High Voltage power supply to the Electron Beam Injector. This conduit required a 90 deg elbow, The EE in charge of the high voltage system insisted the elbow be made from Aluminum, spe...

I might want to add never ever make a pressure vessel or vacuum chamber from welded Aluminum. Trust me, if you do, you will regret it.

Examples of corruption and bad allocation of funds: 1) LIGO -- why keep funding this thing? It proved general relativity is wrong -- no gravity waves were ever detected. Instead, they want another $200M+ to make it more sensitive. By gosh, we'll find those gravity waves yet! Pass me another filet m...

Vacuum chambers require some special tricks that need to be remembered. Basically they all revolve around virtual leaks and avoidance of same.

To add a little fuel to this fire, Robert Hirsh walked a fusor into the AEC headquarters and couldn't get anybody's interest even though he did get a very good job out of it. As head of the government's fusion program. The bigheads at the national labs were too busy empire building to pursue an appr...

If WB7 is much like WB6 the costs will be much less if vacuum manufacturers , AVS and AIP get involved. The vacuum companies might also want contribute surplus to something like this. 250k to 500k is about the right size to get grants from local companies for a little program which is likely to have...

Nanos Don't do anything other than clean the magnets really really well. Think soap and water, muriatic acid bath followed by a a wipedown with acetone. Its best that you do all this in a room that is as dry as possible, with a dehumidifier going and possibly covered in a filtered plastic hood with ...

When high voltage cuts loose it really wakes you up. I used to live across from the "Substation Of Doom!!!!"(there were some lawsuits involving EM effects and a rather hilarious program on Court TV) and it cut loose one morning as I was eating breakfast. The funniest part was when I called NU to rep...

One word, outgassing. Vacuum is going to have to drive everything and controlling the vacuum is going to control, especially if you get sputtering combined with high voltages. Arcing will really ruin your day as it does things you have to see to believe. In order 1. Magnet containment, insulation. ...
