Nobody can goes down the main street of reactor development patrolled by the NRC. It takes billions. They will sneak by necessity through the blacked back alleys of secret military development and deployment. I wonder if a case could be made that with respect to a Polywell powered by pB11 that it d...

What world balance of military power? In any event, having the energy is one thing, doing something useful with it is another. If anything, I think that if we (the US) do develop Polywell successfully, it would just further widen the real capabilities gap. We have a number of things on the burner a...

Obviously, you didn't get the memo. The public testing and test results are now secret testing and test results. So secret, they don't talk about them at all anymore. Oh dear. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with Polywell should it be successful! I can imagine the Navy internally saying they n...

I'm not picky about how the launch system is implemented as long as it works competitively. It's been a few decades since I read Heinlein's TMIAHM. My interest is in what commercial applications there are that would help drive the development of a civilian FEL and what benefits could be derived from...

There's a huge difference between being as helpful as possible from the outside and being on the inside and being able to coordinate and make long term plans. Also, given the huge potential for mischief wrt moving asteroids that somebody might just happen to aim at the wrong place or the impact of c...

ONR Free Electron Laser Lives!

http://www.quantumday.com/2012/03/office-of-naval-research-free-electron.html I thought this program had fallen under the budget axe. Happy to see that there's still some life to it :) Does anybody have any thoughts as to the suitability of the FEL for Civil Engineering purposes? Tunneling (subways...

Thanks for the additional links Ladajo! Although I'm mainly a lurker I appreciate the extra effort I've seen you extend to helping people on the forum. BTW, I'm a Navy brat and if you're familiar with the NRS (now the NMCRS) I wrote and supported (end-user, 20 bases+HQ) the software for their first ...

SpaceX

It's a shame that Elon Musk (SpaceX) and Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) are not on board Planetary Resources either as investors or as advisers. Although Musk probably stands to benefit greatly as he would seem to have the best shot at providing their launch vehicles.

I'm not a scientist, I have no background in physics. I'm a programmer. I see. As e.g. Cap. Petersen is not physicist, as may be other weapon systems professionals do not know plasma physics. If you know logic very well. So, please answer me please how so many naval weapon professionals are going t...

No Joseph Chikva, I will not leave your father or your family alone. Because you do not care for the opinions of people that post information on these forums in good faith. Because you accuse them, using weasel words, of being liars. Because you accuse me, personally, of merely "speculating" as if w...

Is that their meaning? Or yours? As everyone knows that smaller and stronger better than bigger and weaker. But where is Polywell here? Has ONR's or any other serious organization's spokesman made any statement on Polywell? I see only your speculations. Sorry. As far as current ship designs not hav...

Also, the issue with the current upgrade plan for ship systems is that the ship designs do not support sufficient power density to run it all, and drive themselves around at speed. Polywell is a possible answer to the conundrum. Is that their meaning? Or yours? As everyone knows that smaller and st...

Their specific needs for Polywell are to: power naval ships electric drive systems, power directed energy weapons (Optical and Free Electron Lasers), power electro-magnetic assisted launch systems (EMALS program), power magnetic rail guns. Really? I thought that such systems can work being fed from...

The funders (ONR) matter, and so far they are happy enough to increase funding and continue the project. Yes, this is an argument. But who is ONR? US Government/Department of Defense/Department of the Navy/Office of Naval Research (ONR) Their specific needs for Polywell are to: power naval ships el...

so this is a pretty dumb question, i got lazy after google failed me. I remember Dr. B saying that the size of a demo polywell reactor will be 3 meter in radius, lets say there's some problems, how much room do we have left to work with? Say instead of 3 meter in radius, 10 meters in radius, vs how...
