Hello drmike,
Pardon me pushing a dead horse. But cannot a spiral path be flattened to a sinusiod?
Simon makes the point that the probabilities change in 3D. Could we not add fudge factors to acocomodate?

Hello drmike,
One question I feel ought to be asked even though it's possibly a bit dumb ...
Why do you not constrain your simulation to two dimensions? Adding a third dimension just boosts computational requirements, for (possibly) no real gain in understanding.

Hello Joe, I am a regular reader of NewScientist, and such journals as they report on and I am interested in. I am not however a creationist, although I have a few religious convictions. I believe in the scientific method because it has gotten us much farther than any religion has ever done. For tha...

If the data does not fit the model, then the model needs fixing. If anthropogenic global warming is happening, there will be evidence for it. The James Randi Educational Forum has an ongoing thread on the subject (be warned; it gets feisty at times). The thread quotes this pdf by Armstrong et al:- h...

I think that the amount of influence humans have on the environment is small compared with a decent volcano or earthquake. We may have some influence on algal blooms, which could indirectly alter the amount of insolation we receive. We should moderate the impact we make on our planet, because it ain...

Polywells can be enforced to be aneutronic. This is essentially a trade- or state-secrets argument. In other words, the tuning and adaptation necessary to convert a p-B11 design to a D-D or D-T design is so difficult that it can't be accomplished by mere mortals. This would be a wonderful argument ...

Tony, are you arguing that the technical details of a polywell will be able to be maintained as trade secrets? Ummm, no, not really. Ideally it would be open source. The reason I think that the Bussard polywell is unlikely to be a terrorist weapon is that the technical hurdles are considerable, and...

Pardon my cynicism, but it seems that genuine, high tech, physics savvy, engineering terrorists are a bit thin on the ground. We've had nukes for some time, yet no nuke has gone off (as yet) from a terrorist attack. The tech required to crank out a functioning polywell, along with the physics and ch...

I offer my thoughts and sympathy to Dr. Bussard's family and friends also. I hope his work may continue and prosper, because I think we (the human race) really need it.

Stuffed. Actually I think fusion is much more likely than any of the other items. A cure for cancer ... well, that is such a broad grouping of separate malaise that it defies belief. If they said, "Breast cancer", or "glioma", or "pancreatic islet cell carcinoma" ... I might give it a better mark. B...
