One interesting fact I learned from a guy at futurepundit.com is that 50% of miles driven in the US are by cars less then 6 years old. Another factor to consider is that if everyone had a plug in hybrid with a 40 mile all electric range, over 70% of our oil use for driving would go away. I believe b...

Btw another mega scale desalination possibility with very cheap energy is to try to grow crops in the desert. If you look at Morocco-Egypt, and the Saudi Arabia area.. that is immense amounts of land. But the people only live in small parts of it, like along the Nile River. On a really big scale lik...

Its interesting that half the cost is power. I've been predicting for some time that a growing percentage of the cost of whatever we use is going to be electricity. A lot of thinkers today want to raise the price of electricity to discourage consumption. Sometimes quite dramatically. One problem the...

Wow great article scareduck... I had not heard of this plant, they are doing exactly what I was talking about! 70 million gallons a day is .26 million cubic meters a day I believe. Or about 80 million cubic meters a year. Thats a lot of water.. the new plants in the world tend to be around 100 milli...

That sounds like really great news Simon. You mentioned there is interest waiting in the wings, can you tell any more information about that?

I'm no geologist but I'd think that if you're in an area that's prone to sinkholes, or already has had them, that would be an argument in favor of pumping up the aquifer. Good point just because someplace was an aquifer before we got there, doesn't mean its automatically a good idea to refill it:)....

Re: Mega Scale Desalination

I would offer that there is no profit in dumping reverse-osmosis produced clean water into the aquifers. No one would pay for it. (Yes, I will admit it is getting cheaper, and if we get IEC fusion electricity down in price, that could make it affordable.) But the issue is who is going to pay for it...

Mega Scale Desalination

One thing I would like to see is the aquifers in the world refilled. Modern desalination technology has come an amazingly far way. So far, that many countries are constructing big new desalination plants right now. Mainly in the middle east, but also starting in China and elsewhere. With the new rev...

The big pharma aspect is new to me. Very interesting. I once read about simulating the whole process of a specific protein entering a cell to the molecular level. The writer estimated it would take I think a 5 petaflop machine a month to do. I'm going to look for some of the links and post them her...

I've posted it at a couple message boards I go to. Each time I see interesting new information I plan to bump those posts. The people who replied some of them were talking about other fusion ideas that seemed more ametuerish. But I told them we should definately look into all those on a serious level.

Good point about solar and airconditioning, I've read of some of that for cars. I think solar has the most promise out of those options. I just don't see it as the big baseload required for a civilization. If you have to build backup coal or nuclear plant incase the sun isn't shining.. then you migh...

M. Simon, great post.. It really showed the military advantages with having a device that can generate energy like that. Thats why I'm an optimist on the technology being developed.. if one nation decides not to develop it, it is another nation can leapfrog them in technology. I believe each year th...

Solar, wind and biofuels have no chance of displacing coal ever imo. While solar might have some cool uses like built into clothing or roof tops 20 years from now, thats a big difference from providing baseload power.
