When you have to change lots of things to make something better it takes a while to roll out the infrastructure. Polywell is nice because it is a "plug in" solution. You just change power plants. You don't have to change the grid and retrain the meter readers. If Polywell works out right - and well...

My father was a radar technician in WW2 - turned me onto SF when I was 6 with the Lensman series. He worked out at White Sands Missile Range, where they had a ballistics calculator with 2k of ferrite core memory. He never though much of personal computers - when they came out in the 'late 70s, early...

So, if we figure out how to move the planet with a heim gravity drive or woodward inertial drive, we can stay in the habitable zone (might have to put another drive on Mars and fly it out of the way, though). How do we deal with the core cooling? Anyone got any ideas about injecting more uranium, o...

Warning! Speculation Ahead! The positive and negative possibilities are mind boggling. Fortunately the long development time will give us some time to consider them. We're probably looking at the end of the century time frame. Peta Hz clock rates. (snip) Back in the mid-80s, I recall one article in...

Went to jail myself for a night, for not having insurance... and running a red light. The car was, of course, towed off...

That was close to 25 years ago. It was a decided lesson - haven't been without coverage since!

Re: Is Capitalism Evil?

Is Capitalism evil? Yet another great piece from the American Thinker:http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2010/03/is_capitalism_evil_1.html The real question is, is liberty evil? You can't have one without the other. I would say that 'evil' is in the eye of the beholder on this. To the statist, the...

I originally thought of posting some examples, but it occurred to me that anyone who has the slightest familiarity with this issue, probably already knows about the various problems reported with the NHS. And those that don't? Why are they talking out of ignorance? Because they're enamored with the...

Just ask canadians, britons, french, japanese, spaniards, swedes, dannish, etc, etc, if they think their public healthcare systems are so bad. That'd be me. It is that bad. Unless you like living in a system choked that way. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1255858/Neglected-lazy-nurses-Kane...

Haven't seen him - it could be he just walked out to cool down for a while. Maybe he's out playing in the snow before coming back in for more diatribes about how we're going to broil in our own juices from AGW...

I figured I ought to use what was on the site - .661 MMbtu, or 661,000 BTU per hour at 100KW. A therm = 100,000 BTU, so it uses 6.61 therms, at 81 cents a therm, for 100KW. 6.61*.81=$5.36 (rounding up...) $5.36 / 100KW = 5.36¢ /kWh for fuel. Not sure how you're getting 50 cents - what am I missing h...

At $700k - $800 k each and 100KW, the cost is $7-$8 /watt. With 50% subsidy (state and federal) costs compete with solar. Set at your own facility there is no "delivery charge" in the cost of the electricity so your cost is capital and natural gas. Fuel is converted to electricity at over 50% effic...

okay, sorry, just talked to my brother, he graduated with a chem engineering degree. So you gotta keep refuel the fuel cell... that's cool. How long can these fuel cells last, putting out the amount of power claimed? A month tops? I can see this being in cars, a lot tho, that should be his goal, pu...

When she mentioned solar, he said 'We can use solar' - and then there was a quick cut. Makes you wonder what was edited out. Yea, I was wondering about that, too. As for transportation use, in California, natural gas powered buses are quite popular. Seems they could replace the IC engine with an el...

When she mentioned solar, he said 'We can use solar' - and then there was a quick cut. Makes you wonder what was edited out. Seems to me this would be a decent power plant (in size, at least) for an electric car. And - this would (if the size permits) allow a significant change in auto configuration...
