Re: superconducting magrid design

hey guys, just popping my head in with a quick note. i priced out the NbTi wire needed for the magnet a few weeks ago. - 64 turns (8 x 8) of 2mm - NbTi wire with copper - for all 12 magnets (something like ~650m I forget the exact number) - It was capable of running at 2kA - has an operating tempera...

Re: superconducting magrid design

I think it's a decent idea, but I'm just worried about insulation for the LHe. how about we have the LN2 go all the way around, but make the last vacuum chamber include the back half of the toroid? so you'd have the plasma facing side with water in it, the back side would be a vacuum, then you'd hav...

Re: superconducting magrid design

sooo... I just realized something. cooling the LHe tube to ~4K will effectively create a cryopump. Now, you wouldn't want any water vapor trapped in the vac chamber (obviously), but please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but we don't NEED the thermal insulation vacuum chambers to be at ultra high v...

Re: superconducting magrid design

updates: as you can see shrinking the size further is limited by the diameter of the nuts and bolts holding it together... Do you see what I mean now about the feed-thrus? I still think there will be massive issues separating them. I mean yes, you could use L-joints with holes cut in them, but whate...

Re: superconducting magrid design

gotcha. okay, that way it'll be then. i'll get on re-designing it later on tonight. glad you understand what i meant about the welding, i could illustrate it, but that'd be overkill. by outer case, do you mean the outer grid? the part that's outside of the magrid and held at a high -ve voltage to pu...

Re: superconducting magrid design

yes, i understand what you're saying, however this is insanely problematic from a fabrication standpoint. i initially thought about the method you described, but abandoned it. the way i see it is this: you have the torii halves for the magnet all nested inside of each other, right? ok awesome. then ...

Re: superconducting magrid design

Thanks for the links, no I wasn't aware of them. Feed-thrus I'm thinking will look like this: Where the bolts are, the part that sticks out and holds the bolt goes all the way around the circumference of the shape. Where the feed-thrus are, that part does NOT intersect the bolts, and does not go the...

Re: superconducting magrid design

yeah... the vacuum gaps threw off my initial thinking so I've gone back to the drawing board. I started modeling it out last night but didn't finish. It's muuuuch more complex than the initial design :S basically, I need to be able to carry LHe, LN2 and the vacuum through flexible teflon tubes. Is t...

Re: superconducting magrid design

You want a vacuum gap for thermal insulation between the liquid helium and liquid nitrogen layers. So: Superconducting wires, probably multiple turns, in a liquid helium vat. Vacuum gap. Liquid nitrogen vat. Vacuum gap. Cool Water cooling. Vacuum gap. Hot water, molten salt, or liquid metal cooling...

superconducting magrid design

Hi guys, I've been lurking for a while now and finally registered on the forums, so I thought it was time to share some of my ideas... I think Famulus had it right when he said we need to build a superconducting magrid. Go big or go home, as it were. So here's my design. This is a complete work in p...
