Re: What constitutes a Demonstration Power Plant?

Those reactors that run on DT-will get 80 % of their energy from the kinetic energy of the fusion neutrons. That energy has of course to be converted to heat, so in principle any DT-reactor could be constructed by retrofitting an existing coal power plant with the fusion core, which would save time ...

Re: More Helion Energy news....

Yes, I read those abstracts, but a journal paper is more interesting because of the much more content than fits an abstract. It is already many years since Helion Energy published a paper on their work, so hopefulyl they will publish these new results in a paper that is accessible.

Re: General Fusion in the news

This is really interesting news. It will be exciting to follow how this develops further. I guess the funding support from the UK and the DT-handling know-how at JET are important factors in their decision to build the demonstration plant in the UK at Culham. Hopefully this example would inspire to ...

Re: General Fusion in the news

Very interesting, they are going to give a spherical shape to the shock wave by delaying the hit time of the pistons. This will also reduce mechanical stress load on the structure. It looks like a smart idea, at least in theory. Yes, you are right about their intention to use a spherical shock wave...

Re: 2021 state of the horse race: ITER vs. dark horses

Even for ITER the activities are a mixture of science and technology. TFTR, JET and JT60 showed for tokamaks that the step to Q>=1 is not large, but there still remains a lot of scientific questions to address concerning tritium breeding, disruptions, ELM;s divertors and so on in addition to all the...

Re: 2021 state of the horse race: ITER vs. dark horses

nTtauE.png The risk involved with the most advanced fusion projects has obviously decreased, but success is far from certain at this moment. The gain is so large that it is attractive to persons with deep pockets even if the risk of failure is still significant. This plot of the fusion triple produ...
