Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

This might give you an idea what they are currently dealing with: One more optimization level that goes on the stack! ;) Time pressure definitely drives feature and complexity reduction. Supply chain time is maybe even a stronger forcing. “Do we really need that specialty alloy in this accelerator R...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Experiences gained from propulsion work done by the Helion team in the past, now help with the challenge of increasing rep rate in Polaris: Biggest one is the move from limited pulses to high rep-rate. We showed this in the old pulsed propulsion work and early energy recovery demos, “the millionth p...

Re: General Fusion in the news

That is indeed true. I think other companies should look into establishing footholds in other countries as well.

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

SpaceX was building their factory to make the Starship as they were developing the prototype, 'prototypes are easy,' and their goal is to make 1000. If Helion were to do that that would be revolutionary. Extreme innovation. Antares is the factory next door to Polaris, where they will build their fi...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

It is net electricity. So not just net power. Though for their machine the two are really closely related. Ok, that correction makes the question clearer. In a second (for the 50MW device) they put in X joules of electrical energy and get out 50M + X. My question is, what is X? Well, the 50 MW is t...

Re: More popular buzz about Fusion startups in the New York Times

I'll add this in here instead of creating a new topic, since it's along the same lines. "The chase for fusion energy" https://www.nature.com/immersive/d41586-021-03401-w/index.html They missed Zap Energy. They missed the fact that no Tokamaks including ITER have solved their first wall problem in c...

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Yeah, I am somewhat thinking that too, or he really just does not know where things are right now. He should also know that battery production capacity is nowhere near up to the task. He might change his mind in the coming 3 years IF everything goes well. Heck, maybe as soon as 17 months when ZAP is...

Thanks, that’s helpful and also explains my confusion a little.

Have they indicated power in and power out, as well as net power?

Yeah, lots of fluff everywhere right now. Noticed a lot of articles getting some things wrong too.
Oh well. At least people are taking notice.

Re: Helion Energy to demonstrate net electricity production by 2024

Polaris won't quite do that yet. Polaris will run on D-D (at least most of the time), so will be lower power. It will demonstrate the generation of a small amount of excess electricity (but wont be connected to the grid). The next one after that will be D-He3 and a full 50 MW power plant. That said,...

Re: Small Tri Alpha news blurp

Not sure how neutral beam injection would apply to a Sheared Flow Stabilized Z- Pinch, or any pulsed fusion device for that matter. Plasma physics modeling is done in hindsight, so using it for predictions over multiple orders of magnitude is a crap shoot. After reading Zap's paper on modeling and ...
