Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance

The Z-Pinch device in development by this company will be a competitor with GF, but not Helion, IMO, as they intend to utilize the traditional steam turbine plant for conversion of power to electricity. On the other hand, Helion uses direct conversion. They are both exciting approaches. I agree wit...

Re: Z-Pinch Renaissance

These efforts aim to scale the pinch current, plasma density, and plasma temperature to reach scientific breakeven equivalent conditions by early 2023 in the next generation device FuZE-Q, which is currently being commissioned. I'm guessing this means that they expect to achieve conditions with DD ...

Re: Lockheed Martin news

Not all abstracts/presenters have been listed yet. Helion are invited speakers and had their presentation accepted, but have not received a scheduling yet. So there are likely still a few missing.

Re: General Fusion in the news

An array of pneumatic cylinders surrounding the rotating core will compress the fluid to reduce the dimension of the cavity by a volume factor of 1000 in 5 ms, compressing the plasma to a density of 5x10^22 m-3 and a temperature of 10 keV, achieving around 10% of the Lawson criteria. Ugh, I was exp...

Re: Article on fusion patents of FIA members

According to the article Helion Energy has filed three patent applications and one of them has been granted and the other two are pending. According to the article there is no patent assigned to ZAP Energy, but there is a patent filed in 2017 by Shumlak, Nelson and McLean on behalf of the Universit...

Re: Article on fusion patents of FIA members

I saw that. Indeed the IP in fusion is growing rapidly. Helion has a few patents granted already too. I think ZAP has a few applications out as well.

Re: More Helion Energy news....

The way to get 3He from Tritium is through natural decay with a rate of around 5.5% year of starting Tritium mass. If they plan to "mine" 3He out of Tritium storage they will need quite a big and complex storage/processing facility. But if they can make DD fusion economical, than going through Trit...

Re: More Helion Energy news....

One thing successful commercialization of Helion will do is to put away all of those schemes for mining the Moon for He3. Why go to the expense and hassle of mining the Moon when you can just breed your own He3? I wonder if Robert Zubrin is aware of Helion Energy. Yeah, mining the Moon for He3 is n...

Re: "Former fusion scientist on why we won't have fusion power by 2040"

With the advent of new commercially available 20T magnets brings me hope. But that huge barrier of no funding is still the 400 pound gorilla in the room. "Performance of this magnet is similar to a non-superconducting one that was used in an MIT experiment that concluded its experiments five years ...

Re: More Helion Energy news....

Anyway, from what I understand, they will have several operation modes for the generator. One that promotes He3/T production and one that produces more power through D-He3 reactions. They will likely run the former more in the beginning to build a He3/T inventory and then switch to the latter. Here...

Re: "Former fusion scientist on why we won't have fusion power by 2040"

Blech... I just skipped through the video. Pretty much the usual arguments. I don't know that guy, but he sounds like Dan Jassby (I think it might be him). He is a joke in the fusion community, particularly the Tokamak community. Apparently he’s been pissed since TFTR was shut down. Retired back in ...

Re: More Helion Energy news....

OK, so for one: The D-D reaction has two branches. One produces a Triton and a proton and one produces a Helion and a neutron. That neutron can then be used in a Lithium blanket to breed more Tritium, up to 1.9 Tritons per neutron. That is because of the reaction 7Li + n produces a Triton, a He4 and...

Re: More Helion Energy news....

Thanks Skipjack, that was very informative. The pB11 advantage would be fuel availability and price. I don’t know how quickly you can ramp up a fleet of D3He reactors, but with p11B there are no real issues with fuel. Well, their generators are making their own He3 and it will be relatively quick. ...
