Re: simple particle simulators

>I don't think you can run a meaningful sim for a polywell. How would you reconcile the magnetic fields against the electric fields at high beta and sufficient particle densities to mean anything useful? That would need some pretty serious custom code and processing power that is beyond anything rea...

Re: simple particle simulators

CUDA is easier to program in, but also, nvidia is relatively dominant in GPUs as well. If you wanted to run a meaningful PIC simulation of a Polywell, I would recommend against anything that didn't use Fortran or C/C++ because it either means they're using an insignificant amount of particles or low...

Re: Can anyone walk me through Field Reverse Configurations?

>It is significant perhaps that their research survived due to piggybacking on the Tokamak bandwagon. Most forms of fusion research survived through tokamak piggybacking (ie. FRCs for helicity control and injection, mirrors for pre-heating). However, it should be known that FRCs have the most attent...

Re: Can anyone walk me through Field Reverse Configurations?

In order to understand their stability, you need to work from a kinetic approach. MHD would show the FRC to be unstable to tilt, kink, or some kind of rotational mode, if I remember correctly. However, the main underlying reason for their stability is thought to be due to the finite larmour radius e...

Re: Princeton FRC work

Well, the source I heard it from isn't as close to Tri-Alpha, but that's the only reason I can say it out here. If I got the information directly, I wouldn't relay it here. However, as I know it, the investors' meeting went okay.. I was surprised by the lay off remark as well.

Well, that's not good. I think my projects are under the ones that are less.

Re: Princeton FRC work

FRC funding has stopped and started several times before. The problem is that most physics work involving fusion plasmas is centered on tokamaks/tokamak-like devices or laser inertial (well, pretty much just NIF's funding is the biggest of all fusion projects). So, most FRC research is space plasma ...

Re: Princeton FRC work

Either way, I am quite excited by this work. It shows a lot of promise and it also somewhat validates the work of the other FRC teams like Tri Alpha and Helion. Tri-Alpha doesn't need Princeton to validate its work. Tri-Alpha's team works with a budget that's bigger than the Princeton group, and pr...

Re: Vortex Rings, Application to Plasma Injection, FRC?

It's interesting, but a vortex ring is essentially what an FRC is, except the FRC/compact toroids is a more general term that needs to be qualified (ie. is it oblate? azimuthal spin? etc.).

Re: Van Allen Belts

It basically just comes down to a magnetic mirror here.. The difference in the strength of the magnetic field at the surface vs as far as possible (ie. the equator) is quite large. The more interesting thing is when you have solar flares or sudden larger influxes of solar wind hitting the magnetic f...

Re: General Fusion in the news

Government money is not the politician's money, nor is it the money of bureaucrats? Whose risk is it, and what is at risk? Ever hear of a politician worrying about the money itself? What is a lobbyist? Educator, or influence peddler (whatever influence means is left up to ones imagination)? Those i...

Re: Cost Skyrockets For United States' Share of ITER Fusion

The main cost-increasing issue of ITER is the bureaucracy that decided on having different members make different parts and shit (to keep the money within their countries in terms of manufacturing or something), not because it's a tokamak. Don't try to imply something that isn't there. When/if the c...

Re: General Fusion in the news

It is not like getting government money where it is pure politics. Bullshit. All types of funding require selling your idea to the buyer. It's the same whether you pitch to government or private investors, but maybe your use of language has to change to accomodate their ears. There's so much blamin...

Re: A Case for Fusion (Looking for Feedback)

Have you ever heard of The Azimuth Project? Part of their goals and directions are guided by the idea of "Plan C", as in Plan A is business as usual will fail, Plan B is what happens when we try to fix that mistake, and Plan C is when we fail to fix that mistake (which is highly likely because preve...
