Re: High Beta Fusion Reactor

Yes, Tom McGuire, purported designer of the LM device, did his PhD in the MIT aerospace engineering department.. Did you read that pdf? I can only assume that if there is continuing research on this, LM must fund them partially alongside some NDA.

Re: High Beta Fusion Reactor

They did have a pretty boastful claim of .. what, 5 years for a proof-of-concept device and 10 years for a commercial product? So, 3 / 7 years to wait and see, eh?

Re: High Beta Fusion Reactor

I don't think I've seen or heard any new information about it.. But in their video, it was stated to be a cylindrical device, high beta, a "different" kind of magnetic topography, and designed by Tom McGuire. In addition, the speaker makes a point about the "adjacent possible" which is the term he u...

Re: 20 years away, and always will be

I completely agree with you ladajo. The NIF report was definitely annoying to read after they missed their mark so many years in a row, only to allow the media to make such misunderstood statements. :/ @mvanwink5: I'm not railing against a blog post; I was agreeing with the reasons behind non-disclo...

Re: 20 years away, and always will be

Yes, well, my original point was that they try not to release information because there will be speculations which then won't match expectations. It doesn't matter if you stick a disclaimer that these speculations are "for fun and wild" because once it goes past the original kernel of posters, it be...

Re: 20 years away, and always will be

People want news, then they speculate and make guesses I disagree. The story here is not the "rabble making guesses." It's the fusion experimenters making promises they discover they can't keep. I'm not suggesting any wrong doing -- they probably can't do what they do without being optimists. But t...

Re: New Post is up.

When you talk about simulation, you also have to know the corresponding physical time scale. In order to run an accurate kinetic or gyrokinetic code (or even fluid codes), you'll need to know how to simplify the physical equations into computational models that you can program into a code that will ...

Re: 20 years away, and always will be

Am I alone in feeling the hopes of 5 years ago were unjustified? The problem may be the understanding of the physics of fusion is fundamentally incomplete, or just wrong. The fact some fusion technologies are comparativelly cheap (single digit millions) makes all the more shocking there aren't more...

Re: New Post is up.

> And, once the simulation works, it is only the map. To prove it, you will need to build. You're right. Theory always has to work hand-in-hand with experiment. You have to benchmark with other codes, and benchmark against reality. I don't think it would be necessary to make such visual apps for the...

Re: New Post is up.

>try and fail, and when you fail, fail fast Ideally, that's what we want for the fusion industry as a whole, but not for every individual. But, there's a giant cost of entry difference between current tech start-ups and fusion start-ups. With tech startups, the science and engineering is already the...

Re: New Post is up.

Modeling is for wimps: Theory is also for wimps: I agree with the general statements of those parts of the post, but I think it's also important to highlight that these are all just different approaches to analyzing problems and ideas (ie. computationally, analytically, experimentally). It's just t...

Re: New "universal" constant for plasmas?

I remember reading through this. It looks interesting! I heard that their plan is to look at lab plasmas to see if it has such a quantity as well, but since their focus is on space plasmas, I'm not certain that they will.

Re: Streaming Instability? Sup Brah!

What are the normal coordinate systems used for numerical simulations in previous codes? Or, actually, what kind of coordinate system is usually used for a magnetic mirror system?

Re: Streaming Instability? Sup Brah!

Principal value integral is just like.. taking the main part of the integral such that your function is single valued, or something similar to that. There's probably more complicated or advanced catches and tidbits about it though. Why is it that g0(v) must have a valley if it has a peak? I'd love t...

Re: UK Culham Fusion visit - what questions to ask?

You might not get much love or understanding from them regarding Polywell. But, by all means, have at it! I think it's more likely that any scientist will be more of an expert in their own specialization and would prefer not to comment on things outside of their expertise because it's a bad politic...
