Re: Extraterrestrial colony companies

Blackbody radiation scales with the 4th power of temperature. So a 30% reduction in incoming solar energy gives less than a 9% drop in temperature. On the other hand, if I've got my calculations right, a planet twice the distance from the star would have a roughly Earth like temperature.

Re: ENN Fusion Engine Challenge (FUGINE)

"Climate change", second sentence in the introduction. Well, there goes their credibility. Fusion energy does not need a bogus climate crisis to justify it.

Re: Thermal battery with 6-8 times the energy density of lithium

I didn't see Rossi's picture in the article, but a thermal generator with only 3 moving parts? Suggests thermoelectric generator with efficiencies ranging from 6% to 15%, that doesn't seem like a very good deal to me. I've read of Stirling-electric generators with a grand total of 2 moving parts, n...

Build a wall, steal a wall, who would have thunk it https://www.facebook.com/thedailyshow/videos/1164893220345695/?t=2   And...that's an argument for not building a wall? Or one for building a wall along with more border guards/troops to reinforce it and help keep it secure? If a bank get...

Will the desalination and water pumping be able to match the highly variable electrical production from solar and wind?

Re: EMC2 news

A fission reactor that can be transported by air, then set up behind local materials for radiation shielding, not a huge problem. Transporting that same reactor home after it's been operating, much harder. Fusion would be a huge improvement in longer lived induced radiation. But the polywells we've ...

As I understand it, carbon fiber produces fewer secondaries from cosmic rays than a steel structure. A matter of atomic number.

Re: Extraterrestrial colony companies

If polar regions are premium real estate on the Moon, a transfer station at L1 or L2 seems a strategic location to catch a shuttle to the lunar surface. I'm assuming a transportation architecture where using 3 specialized spacecraft and 2 transfer stations, one in LEO and the other somewhere near t...

Re: possible legislative threat

Since the original post, the bill has morphed twice, first to a mostly harmless form, then to the form of a study committee on the issue, with much harder to predict long term fallout, passed the legislature, and been vetoed. It may return in future legislative sessions in some form, as the veto was...

This reminds me of the electrolytic cold fusion fiasco.

Claimed energy costs less than a tenth natural gas? That smells of a badly considered scam.

Re: Sell The Whitehouse to Trump

Under a federal government shutdown, it would nominally be on State and local governments, and prepared citizens, to keep order. Hopefully local police will give rabid democrat mayors the big middle finger if ordered to stand down in the face of rioters. If not, being on favorable terms with some we...
