POPS system

I just found this paper published in no less than the Physical Review Letters: "Experimental Observation of a Periodically Oscillating Plasma Sphere (POPS) in a Gridded Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Device" by Park, Nebel, Stange and Murali, 2005. http://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevLett.95...

The problem with fission is plutonium.

If we start building a lot of nukes every one will want one.
That's what fast breeders would like to solve.

Stardestroyer.net

I've made a topic in Stardestroyer.net. There are allot of fellow geeks there, most of them would be interested in helping Polywell, if they could be convinced. The topic link is: http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?p=2517327#2517327 If you can think that there is something to add, but too la...

I remember hearing that fast breeder reactors are the way to go, but in the UK research in that area has I believe ended sometime ago.
Japan is doing research.

What is TED?
TED stand for Technology Education and Design. It's like a con for engineers. A multi-touch technology demonstration there gained enormous publicity there, more then enough to jump-start his company "Perceptive Pixel" (http://www.perceptivepixel.com/ ).

The only relevance fission has to polywell reactors is that, to the extent people accept fission as a solution, there is less urgency to develop fusion. I think, if people will accepts fission, then they will go nuts over fusion. Fusion IS cleaner and MUCH more powerful overall. If for nothing else...

Fission

Some among this board believe that fission is not worth its cause. This is not true.

Most issues of fission reactors has been dealt with, and so-called problems already have a solution.

Well, discuss.

Unlikely. I think the costs include already some savings for keeping some of the stuff from the previous experiments at SpaceDev. Equipment and place is considered in savings. Personal and wages are not that easy, as you cannot pay someone with a PhD below average, even if he is interested. Retired ...

My only understanding is that the electrons come from a cathode ray-like tube, and the trick to not make the cathode ray a interfere with the field lines is to quickly "close" it down. This has to be done regularly because some electrons are always lost due to losses (hitting the cusps I recall?).

The US Navy knows full well what its funding, and the electrolytic cell people do seem to have finally proven the existence of some sort of anomalous nuclear fusion process. I personally don't think so, at least not without the hint of either truly incompetent administration or a black project hidi...

Not bad, although I think the cube may be misleading. Won't it be a dodecahedron be the final reactor form?

There may well be trade restrictions on which countries the technology could be sold to, which could have a dramatic effect on who has it, and who does not. Not likely. Unlike fission, you cannot use fusion reactors to make weapons. Well, as a neutron source, maybe. Still, no matter what you do, yo...

What rules and win conditions would you suggest for a fusion competition, and why? Devices must be examined by a safety team, and emergency radiation leakage response crew should be on standby. We are talking about nuclear fusion here. D-D reaction should be done, as that is relatively cheap to get...
