The U.S. ITER Project office in Oak Ridge announced today it had awarded $33.6 million in contracts for niobium tin and copper strands for the Toroidal Field Conductor, one of the major U.S.-responsibility components being provided to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor Project.

The contracts were awarded to Luvata Waterbury Inc., of Waterburg, Conn., and Oxford Superconducting Technology of Carteret, N.J. According to the announcement, Luvata will produce 6,430 kilometers of niobium tin strand and 4,795 kilometers of copper strand, and Oxford will produce 1,840 kilometers of niobium tin strand. The deliveries are scheduled for 2011, the U.S. ITER office said.
