As far as I can see, none of the dark horse fusion projects has negatively influenced fusion funding of others in contradistinction to leviathan ITER, and therein lies the heart of the ITER complaint. Without that one, all eggs in one high risk basket issue, no one would disparage ITER. Further, ITER proponents are extremely territorial and display worried funding behavior by actively disparaging all competitors, with great political effectiveness, especially those projects that have short timelines and relatively small project costs that might lead to questions and doubts about the prudence of extreme high dollar and extreme completion time lines such as those of ITER.

Right now all (nearly) the dark horse critical news is focused on obtaining adequate funding, and I hope to see good news for all those. And ITER funding has, at great expense, helped some of the small projects with spin off research, and also provided insight into how difficult plasma management is. Thus ITER has provided tempering and calibrating realism to enthusiastic fusion projects for investors and fans.

So, should ITER proponents cease their active political funding backstabbing, perhaps ITER standing with the dark horse community would improve into a more collegiate discussion.

From a funding perspective, I think the the next month or two will be very telling for EMC2.
The three possibilities are:
Solid Funding comes on-line; experiment moves forward with scaled up research.
Keep Alive funding sourced; experiment goes forward at a low level rate in more of a seeking real funding mode.
No funding is sourced; EMC2 closes doors, and the concept enters archival status until someone or some funding becomes available later.

I am not sure which is more likely at this point, but I am sure it will resolve this summer which way it will go.

I would also note to everyone that GF was looking for money for a while, and ended up going international and lining up Malaysian $$$. The untold story here is the paucity of US $$$ willing to fund fusion research and why.

From what I have seen, investors willing to fund ventures are enticed away to 'get rich quick software' or 'get Uncle Sam crony money.' A result of American university education and growth of Gubbermant sucking the private economy dry?

Let's hope your item 1 is the path (likely by milestone funding), or item 2 that leads to 1 by stages.

GF's road of design details is long and this is the key (besides the anvil and seal design) to engineering the reactor vessel. However, GF has taken compression method design off the risk list and left plasma as the sole critical issue. Ladajo has made plasma his one issue with GF's design, and that seems to be the constant thorn in all 'fringe' fusion projects (except Polywell?). ITER gets around the plasma issue by making Roman cathedral sized magnets and reactor (and project $), truly brute force strategy characteristic of a leviathan Gubbermant project.

I haven't seen any more on anvil and seal crowd source from GF. Plasma news would be 'the' headline story for GF, as compared to money for the headline story for EMC2. Funny that money, would be the big issue for a promising project (an old gripe).

I believe the Feds are on the verge of zeroing out ITER permanently. The budget is bloating and there is no end in sight.

This will also be presented at the ISSW30 conference:

General Fusion’s collaborators Justin Huneault and Prof. Andrew Higgins from the Shock Physics Research Group at McGill University will also be presenting a General Fusion-related paper: Imploding shock-driven cavitation in cylindrical cavities.

General Fusion did present a paper in May at the conference Parallel CFD 2015 http://www2.cfdlab.mcgill.ca/parcfd2015/. The title was Formation of Cavity in Rotating Liquid As Component of Plasma Compression System and it was presented by Victoria Suponitsky, staff scientist at General Fusion.

So there will be two GF papers and one related paper published.
