D'uh, that article was so balanced and cautious, I'm surprised to find it under a 'Popular Mechanics' masthead...

I'm impressed by Helion's candour, and their hope that the smart money is in zapping hot waste rather than trying to 'break even' with fusion.

FWIW, I'd consider anything but a polywell approach to be a clear decade from break even. I'd hope for polywell to make it within five years, but commercialising the design might well take us through 2020...
