aye, i just realized i need to know the coil radius so i can specify the right amount of amp-turns for a given mag field strength. or alternatively i can find the total length of wire so i can fix the total coil power.

also, fyi, i'm going to scale back to 1m circumscribed radius so i don't have to approximate as much. i'm going to run a standard polywell to find good parameter settings. then i'll use those parameter settings as a standard to compare other configurations.

For the octahedron above: it is circumscribed onto a 1m radius sphere.

Coil radius = 0.49m. Circumference of one turn = 3.08m.

Re: Analysis priorities

Old list:

"1. hanelyp's configuration on pg 1 of the brainstorming thread (radially-aligned coils),
2. mine and hanelyp's cusp conversion / disruption techniques on pg 26 of the brainstorming thread (single-coil octahedral magrid with cusp disruption / with cusp conversion)
3. spherized tombo
4. tombo's inverse wb-6 on pg 5 - check
5. 32-face tombo
6. square spherized wb-6"

Status:

1. hanelyp's config - I don't have a model. hanelyp? Anyone? It looks fun, but I'll have some questions before I start a model.

2. Cusp conversion/disruption - not modeled.

3. Spherized Tombo - not pointilized to 1m radius.

4. Inverse WB-6 - pointilized to 1m radius.

5. 32-face Tombo - not modeled. If this is what I think it is:

Image I don't think it will fit on a 1m radius sphere with the current radius and tube thickness. We can relax the radius and tube thickness and see where that gets us.

6. Square spherized WB-6. You mean this?:

WB-6, square spherized 1m central radius Image
Note: the code comments include coil lengths: segmented and ideal. You probably want segmented for simulation; ideal is included for no special reason.

Code: Select all

//WB-6 Spherized Squares, 1m radius
//segmented coil length = 3.784m, ideal coil length = 3.794m
//+x, +y coil begins

happyjack27,

Modeling and segmenting status:

1. hanelyp's config - I have a model. It's an interesting arrangement of an octahedron.

2. Cusp conversion/disruption - Not modeled. How big and where should the cusp converters be?

3. Spherized Tombo - Not segmented to 1m radius.

4. Inverse WB-6 - Segmented to 1m radius. Delivered.

5. 32-face Tombo - Not modeled. Lower priority because of complexity?

6. WB-6 spherized squares - Delivered above.

7. WB-6 squares - Next for me, 'cause it'll be easy (it has straight lines - Huzzah!) and it's the direct comparison with the WB-6 spherized squares.

8. Back to Spherized Tombo, this time with 1m radius.

9. Dan Tibbet's 4, 2 and 3 coil concepts.

P.S. I've gone back to the "bent" ring post and added the circumferences.

Greetings All, and especially happyjack27,

All these have been interesting simulations but since I have seen no indication of wiffleball behavior (inflation of the mag field by electron interaction) they have not struck me as very realistic. Mayhaps I have just missed it in the volume of stuff.

But one thing that comes to mind to improve things is this.

A while back, when indrek was busy modeling stuff, someone (who I thought was icarus) observed that plasmas operate in a manner similar to superconductors and thus "reflect" magnetic fields. If I am butchering this description, my apologies. But the up-shot was that the bulk plasma could be modeled as a "virtual magnet" inside the MaGrid. The magnets would be a reduced "image" of the MaGrid magnets but with opposite polarity and just strong enough to cancel the field inside the core (I got the impression that it was a simple scale job). Between the "virtual" magnets and the MaGrid, the field would then take on the characteristics of the wiffleball (field inflated, cusps shrunk).

Has this configuration been simulated yet? If not, would you please try it? It might make the simulation a LOT better. If so, could you point me to the results?

Thanks.

my guess is the reason that we haven't really seen a wiffleball is that there just aren't enough particles in the sim to create sufficient electric kinetic pressure. that, and the time scale is too small. if the wb takes even a fraction of a second to from, thats' probably something like a week in the simulation.

so you're suggesting putting a smaller, weaker, inverse current direction magrid inside the magrid, to simulate plasma currents of the missing electrons (since i can't sim that many)? (ofcourse this inner magrid would not be a loss channel.)

great idea. i wouldn't know the relative size or current to run through it. if someone wants to offer some numbers i'd be more than happy to run it.

bear in mind i'm still expermenting with the time increment to find a safe margin that's not too slow, and i'll probably be taking a break over the weekend. so it won't be right away. it'll be tacked on to my ever-expanding list. well, put on priority.

on that note, "submission is closed" for a while while i catch up.

oh, and regarding 32-face tombo, i did an iterated octahedron magrid, which is the same geometry, except there's no coil close approach, it's modeled as a perfect iterated octahedron. so far it doesn't look like it makes much of a difference and esp if the approach is close and the coils are thin, as it looks in the picture, then we might as well say we alreeady got it. so no need to model that. and the square coil wb-6 is the cuboctahedron. in future runs i'll use close-approach model you sent instead of my percet model to make it more realistic. but since i already did a perfect run (electron core formation, at leat), i'm in no rush to model something very similiar.

You can find the relevant image coil radius and image coil strengths here: (depends on wiffleball radius input)

You will basically be simulating what happens to only the particles in the region between a spherical, superconducting plasma of net zero charge (or you could artificially charge the plasma region also) and the MaGrid. I think it is a good, practical, useful sim. to run since it is an estimate of those particles that are of most interest for confinement calcs., without getting overwhelmed with the great number of particles in the core (which would need nuclear physics equations in there to do properly anyway).

Awww, but I like semi-mindless data entry. It's very calming...

A picky point, but in this model the inner magrid did not cancel the field in the center. It had it's own field towards the center. What it did do was serve as a substitute for a plasma. Its magnetic field pushed out the original magnetic field into a Wiffleball like configuration. It didn't prove that a plasma would do this, but it did show that the original magrid generated B- field would indeed form this surface with an opposing central force.

happyjack27, what is the time interval for your simulations? 1 second of simulation = ~ 0.01 microsecond, or ...?.
Can you dumb it down enough to cover a few milliseconds in a reasonable amount of time. Decreasing the particle counts with a corresponding magnetic field strength decrease, or perhaps cheating and giving the particles increased kinetic energy may speed up the evolution of a Wiffleball. Also, shrinking the size of the system may help. Things would evolve faster in a 1 mm wide Polywell than in a 1 M Polywell. Of course these manipulations may also, greatly decrease any accuracy you currently have.
