A reprise of a comment I made at a post on this site. It is about spying and liberalism. And why making things like drugs and gays illegal is a very bad idea. Those behaviors become training grounds for spies.

Actually that's a big reason they do it in the first place, that and the police state/prison industry.

Yes. Quite true. In the early days (1800s) the drugs were legal in the US and illegal everywhere else. Then the Progressives decided we needed the advantages of Prohibition. It was "unfair" that the US exempted itself from all the goodness that flowed from a Prohibition regime.choff wrote:Actually that's a big reason they do it in the first place, that and the police state/prison industry.
And the final irony is that it is the "conservatives" who are the last believers. The one group that can be counted on to put national security at the top of their list while at the same time undermining it with their Prohibitions.
I consider myself fortunate to be living in the end times of their conceits.
The left is making a huge strategic mistake because all they can see are the tactical advantages. Once people see the advantage of shrinking government the left will be next.
I often hit them with this bit of cognitive dissonance on the dope blogs.:
Every tax, every regulation comes with it an army of bureaucrats and behind that an army (with guns) of enforcers.
It is having an effect. But I do have an unfair advantage:
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
There is nothing like discussing the bad effects of a police state with people who are the direct victims of such a state.

Re: Tradecraft
Discussed this today with a guy who lobbies congress to end Prohibition. He thought the idea was very valuable for moving some of the more resistant on the Right.
