The lack any kind of technical knowledge on that board was incredible. Do they really think that they can "feel" their way to a solution with some hand waving.

Yes.

What amazed me is that they actually believe that the US can actually get to 20% AE in the near future (14 years) and that it will work fine.

I published on my blog a while back on a country that had about 10% AE penetration (actual energy production) but fuel use only declined by 2.5%.

It is all unicorns and rainbows (free energy) and if we don't get the unicorns and rainbows ASAP it will be catastrophe.

Irrelevant. Enthusiastic support for Polywell and/or other promising fusion methods is useful no matter the source or skill therefound.

Polywell & related are a unique case where enthusiastic supporters cross partisan lines, and the support can be justified from multiple approaches. That odd couple linkage should be fostered, not denigrated, in the area of shared interest.

I made the same point to the various Gun advocate groups I spoke to years ago. Most of the Gun activists are Republicans, but a lot are Democrats. I made certain everyone understood that the best place for Gun Advocates to be is getting support (and fear) from both sides. We worked with Democrats legislatively a lot, and achieved successes and credibility by making them understand we wouldn't bother them (campaign against them) as long as they agreed with us about the right to keep and bear arms.

I agree about Polywell. And you will note in my discussions of bad science/engineering with Josh I support him where I think he has got it right.

I do not have enemies. I have differences of opinion (for the most part).

I followed a link to an article by a Liberal college professor (who ever heard of one of those?) slamming Obama.

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2010/01/22-7

The guy makes some good points, but he also makes some crazy insane points that won't make any sense to someone with a clue. The comments which followed are very similar in this regard. Some of them are sensible, and others are barking at the moon insane.

What I find particularly odd is how people can easily mix in nut ball crazy talk with some very reasonable things. To borrow a line from Mr. Spock.

Fascinating.

If you've been wondering where I've been, my mom is in the hospital, fairly bad, so I've been spending my whole time there. I still make time to post on DU and NewMars, but not here.

You can tell I have no love for ITER, I try not to be a hater though, because if Polywell doesn't work it is the future for our civilization, but yeah, doesn't look good for our generation (or three).

E&E on DU is not nuke (fission) friendly. I understand where they come from because of the historic costs of nuclear (I myself don't see it being competitive with fossil fuels unless CO2 emissions were banned and it had to compete only with renewables). The fact that renewables now produce more energy in the US than nuclear is a boon for the anti-nukers (fission).

There is some support for the thorium path for nuclear but there seems to be no significant research to those ends outside of India (who has major thorium reserves).

As far as technically minded goes, DU is a political forum with mostly 50 something females in my experience (due to polls in the past attempting to discover demographics, highly unscientific of course). Even if it had more diverse demographics its nature is still political, so you can't really fault them for that.

The Science, E&E, and Skeptics subforums have the technically minded people.
