"The War Against..."

Post by rjaypeters »

Anything we oppose. Why must the politicians of the United States declare a war against anything other than another nation state which threatens a vital national interest?

A short list I can think of: War on Poverty, War on Drugs, War on Terrorism, War on Terror. Any I have missed?

I think the highest wisdom to come out of the twentieth century is this:
"To oppose something is to maintain it." Ursula K. LeGuin
"Aqaba! By Land!" T. E. Lawrence

I'm afraid the irony would confuse too many. A politician with real wit must conceal it.

The "War" rhetoric is designed to make people think about what they feel comfortable giving up in order to "win."

Blatant manipulation, by greedy people who wish to control others.

The War metaphor also helps disguise the targets.

The War On Our Fellow Citizens is not so catchy.

Or how about Steal From Many To Help A Few. The PR value is negative.

Personally I think the War On Terrorists is a fair cop.

The War on Constitutional Rights.

The War on Civil Liberties.

The War on Telling the Truth.

The War on Personal Responsibility.

The War on the Fabric of Society.

The War to Ensure I Get More.
