Ferguson Jumps the Shark
Ferguson Jumps the Shark
"Burn the B$$tch down!"
Really?
After a while, real folks tire of the same slogan filled narrative excusing village idiots, neighborhood criminals, and bullies to burn and loot in front of the salivating press. And 'kind and carrying' Big Brother, lets the few local and bussed in psychos, and riot trained organization men, burn everyone else's life and livelihood in the neighborhood down below the poverty level.
Even the 'black leaders' are old and at the gold watch retirement age having led a 30 year career of hate and blame, offering no practical solutions, just the retread redistribution slogans.... leading only to more poverty and despair.
Sorry, now with Ferguson, the shark has been jumped.

Re: Ferguson Jumps the Shark
After St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch announced there would be no charges against Wilson, Brown’s stepfather was seen exhorting a crowd to “burn” his city down. Where is the justice in that?
Brian Willingham, a church pastor and black police officer from Flint, Mich., told the New York Times, “I now realize, that we who consider ourselves leaders in the black community can’t just be against racism. We have to also be against a portion of black culture that has become increasingly anti-authority and antisocial to a point of self-destruction. This is an enemy we’ve yet to engage in the black community. But it’s a conversation I think we’re forced to have now.”

Re: Ferguson Jumps the Shark
And what happens when it is the other way around? Do stores burn? Mass protests around the city?

Common folk just do not think big. On either side.
You can do anything you want with laws except make Americans obey them. | What I want to do is to look up S. . . . I call him the Schadenfreudean Man.

???On either side.
I divide people into blood types. Need a transfusion? Skin color is not a good idea to use for deciding what blood to use. Besides, even when I was in junior high 'race' was fairly well mixed. No. The only sides here are the imaginary ones... I prefer purple over green neck ties.

We do know that the murder rate in America more than doubled under Alcohol Prohibition. At this time we have no idea about how much of the murder rate in the black community is influenced by Prohibition. From: http://thedea.org/prohibhistory.html
In the US, cocaine abuse was associated with black men, first in the form of laborers using the drug to increase endurance while working long, grueling hours, then in the form of widespread use by Jazz musicians at scandalously racially integrated nightclubs. In yet another echo of opium's history, the press began to spread lurid stories of "cocaine crazed Negroes" attacking white women in the southern states. In response to this fear of drug-fueled blacks, some police departments switched to more powerful handguns out of concern that their current pistols were not powerful enough to bring down such rampaging monsters. Later, Harry Anslinger (head of what would eventually become the DEA) called for harsher penalties for cocaine by describing scenes of racially mixed groups dancing together at clubs under the presumptive influence of cocaine.

And even making the assumption that the WOD hasn't zip, nadda, zilch to do with the higher murder/violent crime rate in the inner city that isn't an argument to continue it. Ending the WOD would free up law enforcement resources currently used to arrest/charge/convict/jail mostly non-violent pot users. Law enforcement could then concentrate primarily on the violent crime that is most people's primary concern. The problem of drug abuse in a legalized post WOD environment could more effectively be dealt with by treatment of the medical problem of drug addiction.

It certainly doubled under Earl Warren.
Crime rates rose by 139 percent during the 1960s, and the murder rate doubled. Cities couldn’t hire cops fast enough. “The number of police per 1,000 people was up twice the rate of the population growth, and yet clearance rates for crimes dropped 31 percent and conviction rates were down 6 percent,” wrote Lucas A. Powe Jr. in “The Warren Court and American Politics,” his history of the Warren Court. “
And wow, the upward trend started BEFORE prohibition, and the next upward trend started BEFORE the war on drugs.

Sure we do. None. None at all. Prohibition has been over for a very long time.

My favorite pet theory is violence goes up with population density controlled by the inability to define your own space.

Re: Ferguson Jumps the Shark
And yet we have this: Violent Crime Went Down
Prohibition is most heavily enforced in "certain" neighborhoods. Reduce the enforcement in those neighborhoods and violence in those places goes down.
The Prohibitionists are involved in mass murder. The Reagan - Bush administration tried to suppress the finding that cannabis is effective against cancer. You can look it up. Of course the Democrats did nothing when they had a chance.
Add in mass murder and the Rs are not looking so good.
Repent.
Well anyway. The Ferguson riots are not about the police killing Michael Brown. That was the trigger. They are about selective enforcement of Prohibition. That is where the anger comes from. The War On.... the young, the poor, the Black.

A war on the young or poor or black? Is that what Republicans want to be known for?"Look, we understood we couldn't make it illegal to be young or poor or black in the United States, but we could criminalize their common pleasure. We understood that drugs were not the health problem we were making them out to be, but it was such a perfect issue...that we couldn't resist it." - John Ehrlichman, White House counsel to President Nixon on the rationale of the War on Drugs.
