Electric Field within the Polywell

The electric field inside a spherical shell of charge is zero.

This is true, but does it relate to the polywell? For the moment, let the polywell be considered to be spherical. But is it really a shell. Might it not be more like a charged solid of uniform density, like this.

I agree that at the exact center point the charge will be zero as for a spherical shell. Do all of the electrons hang out at the boundary of the polywell or are they distributed throughout the polywell.

It makes a difference in the path that an ion takes as it passes through the the core. I envision a distributed field having a focusing effect on the ions, given the correct choice of well depth for the ion energy.

So there are no electrons inside the shell, or an equal number of electrons and protons with the excess electrons in the shell? How do we know this?
